Although the smallest apartment in NYC is only 60 sq feet, it will cost you $1100/month.

New York City is known for having one of the most competitive real-estate markets in the world. There is very little inventory and high demand, which leads to rising prices and ridiculous rental rates. The numbers are shocking when you consider the price per square foot.

Realtor.com reported that the median NYC home listing price in 2021 was $1.3million and the median price per sq foot was $1.500.

RentCafe reported that the average rent for Manhattan apartments this year was $4.072 per month, with an apartment size of 702 sq. feet. RentCafe noted that the cost of renting a Manhattan apartment varies based on many factors such as location, size and quality.

The Smallest Apartment in NYC

The Big Apple's high rental rates led to Mayor Bill de Blasio introducing a plan to use rezoning to create thousands more apartments that can be rented at a fraction of the market price.

Micro-apartments are small spaces less than 350 square feet. Micro-apartments can be used by a single person who is rarely at home.

Erik Conover, a YouTuber, claims that the 60-square-foot micro-apartment in NYC rents for $1100 per monthly. It's in St. Mark's Place near New York University.

Take a Tour

The micro-apartment is situated in a beautiful building with a grand entrance. Conover, a YouTuber and rental agent, found the unit after climbing a flight of stairs.

A mirror was placed near the door, as well as a sink and a mini-fridge, along with a corner shelf. A flat-screen TV was suspended above all of these items. On the other side of the front door was a small closet with two shelves.

Conover stated, "This cannot be legal," as he entered.

After he has passed the fridge, sink, microwave, and microwave, which takes up half of the apartment, a ladder leads to a twin-sized loft bed. The loft bed is just a bunk bed with no bottom bunk. It is located against the wall opposite the front door. The apartment's "living area" is located underneath the bed.

Two fluorescent lights were also installed in the micro-apartment. There was also a window that overlooked an alleyway and some wall outlets. The hallway leads to the bathroom, which is shared by other renters.

For those who have always dreamed of living in the big city, micro-apartments are an affordable-and slightly claustrophobic-option. Conover said, "If you are looking to move to the big city, it is definitely possible-don’t say that the rent is too expensive."
