It's "I" and not "we".
After being told that thousands of his baptisms were not counted, an Arizona priest has resigned.
On its website, the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix confirmed that any person baptized by Fr. Andres Arango was alive up to June 17, 2021 .....
According to Bishop Thomas Olmsted Father Arango had used a single wrong word -- "We" instead "I", thus invalidating all sacraments of admission to the faith he performed to that point. There were many.
"We regret to share some disturbing information about baptisms performed in Rev. The church statement said that Andres Arango was a priest in the Diocese of Phoenix who had also been a member the Eudist religious communities.
"After careful consideration, it was determined that the form (words used by Fr. Andres's baptismal form was incorrect. All of his baptisms up to June 17, 2021 are invalid.
The bishop claimed that the priest was using the phrase "WE baptismize you in Father's name, and Son's name, and Holy Spirit" rather than "I baptismize you in Father's name, and Son,and Holy Spirit". This, according to the bishop, is a serious problem.
"The problem with the use of 'We' is it's not the community that baptizes someone, but Christ, and Him alone who preside at all of the Sacraments and it is Christ Jesus who baptizes."
The Catholicism personal pronouns are complex, to be fair to the priest. The Church doctrine says that it was not the priest who performed the baptism. Instead, the "I" refers only to Jesus Christ.
The diocese went into crisis mode and laid out very clearly what was being done in order to correct all the botched baptisms. It also addressed the multitude of other concerns such as "do I have to go to confession?" How does this affect my marriage?
The first of seven sacraments in the Catholic Church is baptism. It is believed that it cleanses babies of all their sins and the Original Sin they were born with (thanks Adam & Eve).
"I do not believe Fr. "I don't believe that Fr. Andres intended to harm the faithful, or deprive them the graces of baptism and the sacraments," wrote Bishop Olmsted.
"On behalf of our Church, I also sincerely regret that this error has caused disruption to the Sacramental lives of many of the faithful."
In a letter, Fr. Andres, who was previously a Eudist pastor from Brazil, apologized and asked for forgiveness and then announced his resignation.
He said, "It is saddening to learn that I have performed ineligible baptisms throughout my priesthood by using an incorrect formula." "I regret my mistake deeply and how it has affected many people in your parishes and elsewhere."
"With the aid of the Holy Spirit, and in communion with Phoenix's Diocese, I will devote my full-time ministry and energy to helping those affected and resolving these issues. Effective February 1, 2022, I will be stepping down as pastor of St. Gregory Parish in Phoenix.
