CNN reports that Mattel worked closely with the National Down Syndrome Society in order to ensure the doll accurately reflected those with Down Syndrome, including features, clothing and packaging.

In a press release, the CEO of NDSS said, "This is a great opportunity for our community to play with a Barbie that looks just like them for the first-time." This Barbie is a powerful reminder to never underestimate the importance of representation. This is a great step for inclusion, and we celebrate this moment."

The new Barbie features ankle orthotics and a yellow, butterfly, and blue pattern on her outfit. Her necklace also has a chevron symbol, which represents different aspects of society.

Lisa McKnight is the Mattel Executive Vice President and global head of Barbie and Dolls. She also released a statement about the new release.

"Doll playing outside of the child's lived experience can build greater understanding and a sense of empathy .... "We are proud to launch a Barbie with Down syndrome in order to better reflect our world and to further our commitment to inclusion through play."
