A female driver aged 17 struck him and stayed on the scene until emergency responders arrived. No charges were filed.
Authorities said that a teenager driver killed a 41-year old father who stopped to assist ducklings crossing a road in Northern California.
The accident happened on Thursday night in Rocklin. This city is located just outside Sacramento.
In a press release, Rocklin Police Department stated that the man had reportedly been trying to save some ducklings who were at the intersection. As the man stood in the intersection a teenager was driving eastbound on Stanford Ranch Boulevard. The driver of this juvenile vehicle struck a pedestrian that was on the road.
The local police department said that the driver remained on the scene. Emergency first responders were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the site.
The driver of the vehicle was a female aged 17 years. The driver was not arrested at the time, and it is unlikely that she will face charges. The incident is under investigation.
Police told NBC News that they still had a lot to go through in terms of evidence and areas, but it did not appear as if there was any criminal negligence.
Casey Rivara, 41 years old, was identified as the victim by Placer County Sheriff's Office.
Just before the tragedy, neighbors were watching and applauding their father's bravery. They even took photos ( over).
A 12-year old witness told KCRA that "he got out of the vehicle and was shooing ducks, and everyone was applauding because he was really nice."
The witness said, "He helped the baby ducks get over the curb as they were all having difficulty."
The child claimed that the car struck him after his mother rolled down her window and said "Good Job, Good Job." I also said to him, "Good Job," and right after, the second time after that.
"I didn't actually see the car hit him." The 12-year-old boy said, "All I remember was the sound followed by him flying across intersection." "His socks and shoes were in front of our vehicle."
Angel Chow shared Rivara's message on Facebook, thanking her friends and family members for their support.
Chow stated Sunday evening, "We are deeply moved by the love and support that we have received in recent days for Casey Rivara's family and ourselves." We want to thank you all for your kind words and kindness. We are truly humbled to hear about the positive impact Casey has had on your lives.
According to a GoFundMe page created by Casey Rivara's aunt Tracey, his children witnessed the horrifying incident.
The GoFundMe page stated that "On May 18, 2023, my nephew Casey Rivara was driving his kids home from swim practice, when he saw a mother duck and her ducklings trying to cross an intersection." "Casey got off the car to safely cross the road." When he returned to his car, however, he tragically was struck by a vehicle and died at the scene.
The fundraiser stated that Casey met Angel at the age of 17, when she came to his high school from Hong Kong as an exchange student. They fell in love quickly and have been inseparable for 23 years. The couple has two children: Sophia (11 years old) and James (6 years old). Casey was devoted to his family, and he recently began working at the school of their children to stay even closer. He enjoyed working at the school because he could positively influence other children.
The campaign has raised more than $76k out of the $30k target.
