Friends stars pay tribute to James Michael Tyler after his death: You will be so missed

Jennifer Aniston said of Tyler, the famous sitcom star who played Gunther.

Friends cast members pay tribute to James Michael Tyler, their late costar. Tyler died on Sunday after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Many Friends stars took to social media following the tragic news about the actor's passing. Tyler was known for his role as Gunther (a Central Perk employee who is infatuated by Rachel Green), and he appeared in 105 episodes over the 10 seasons of the show.

Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston shared touching tributes via Instagram.

Aniston shared a clip from "Friends," in which Rachel says goodbye to Gunther and kisses him on the cheek. Aniston also shared a photo of Tyler standing in Central Perk as Gunther.

Aniston, 52 years old, wrote the caption to the post: "Friends wouldn't have been the same" Thank you for all the laughter that you brought to the show, and to our entire lives. You will be greatly missed."

Cox, Kudrow and Schwimmer all shared the same Tyler photo in their posts.

"The amount of gratitude that you brought to the room every day is what I am grateful for knowing you. Rest In peace James. Cox, 57 who starred in Monica's role, wrote that Kudrow, at 58, would miss him. We are grateful for your support.

Schwimmer, 54, who played Ross, captioned the post with, "James. Thank you for playing such an unforgettable role in Friends. Also, for being such a big-hearted gentleman offscreen. Buddy, you will be missed.

LeBlanc, 54 posted a photo from a Friends scene in which Tyler's Gunther was featured. He also shared the same photo his co-stars posted about Tyler as Gunther.

"We shared a lot of laughs, buddy. You will be missed. He wrote, "RIP my friend," in his caption.

Maggie Wheeler, the actress who played Janice in the series, paid her respects. Wheeler also posted a photo of Tyler and wrote: "I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know this kind, gentle man." James and I worked together as PR people for Friends events in recent years. I am grateful for the times we shared. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Jeffrey Klarik, who is also the partner of David Crane, co-creator and creator of "Friends," tweeted that he was "a lovely, beautiful man." Today is a sad day. Crane shared his partner's post on Twitter. Klarik and Crane also co-created "Episodes", starring LeBlanc. Tyler starred in an episode on Showtime's comedy.

Tyler revealed his Stage 4 diagnosis of prostate cancer during a June appearance on TODAY. Tyler said that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer in 2018. It later spread to his bones, resulting in lower body paralysis.

Tyler appeared via Zoom on the "Friends' HBO Max reunion special in May. He said that he had been invited to appear in person at first, but he decided not to because he didn’t want to "wanna bring down" the event. He explained that he didn't want to appear like Gunther had cancer on "TODAY."

Tyler's representative stated that Tyler died in his Los Angeles home Sunday morning.

Tyler's family released a statement to the outlet as well. They said, "The world knew Tyler as Gunther (7th "Friend") from the hit series Friends, but Michael's loved ones know him as an actor and musician, cancer-awareness advocate and loving husband. Michael enjoyed live music and cheering for his Clemson Tigers. He was always up for new adventures and had a passion for life. You will always be a friend of Michael once you have met him.

Tyler is now separated from Jennifer.
