Florida police released video footage of the man's unsuccessful escape attempt.
To escape the authorities, a Florida man tried to run from the law by jumping off a bridge. It didn't work.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office has released aerial footage of an incredible high-speed chase that took place in Fort Myers on Friday, October 29, after deputies tried to stop a vehicle from being stolen.
Authorities claim that Bryan Gray, 34 years old, "sped away" before hitting Bryan Gray on the Edison Bridge's retaining wall. Gray then careened across the bridge to the other side. Gray jumped from the driver's seat of the van, beelined it towards the edge of bridge, and then, just as police fled to arrest him, jumped into the Caloosahatchee River.
The bridge's height is greater than 50 feet.
The pilots of aviation saw him swimming under the bridge and called the Fort Myers Police Department Marine Unit. They pulled him out of the water, arrested him, and took him to the hospital.
Gray was not awarded a gold medal for high diving, but he did get in trouble when he was charged with Grand Theft Auto and Fleeing & Eluding." The Lee County Sheriff's Office posted a statement to Facebook.
Fox4Now reports that Gray's aunt Marcellachacon is the van's owner. She said that Gray asked her to come over and take a shower. He then ordered a warm meal, as he claimed he was homeless.
Her husband saw the van had disappeared and called the police.
