The teenager was captured on courtroom cameras as she read out a statement with tears in her eyes, barely able get the words to come out as she said "I wish that I could remember what happened."
Mackenzie Shirilla read an apology to the families of her victims in court before Monday's sentencing. She was 17 at the time she crashed her car into a brickwall, killing both her passengers.
She read the handwritten statement, which she had written, through tears, as she insisted that she would never have intentionally killed Dominic Russo (20), her boyfriend. She said she also wished that "I could recall what happened" the day of her boyfriend's fatal accident.
Shirilla, who didn't testify at the trial, read a brief statement just moments before the Judge announced her sentence.
"I wish I could remove all your pain."
"I'm deeply sorry to the families of Dominic and Davion. One day I hope you will see that I never did this on purpose or let it happen. Shirilla said, "I wish I could remember exactly what happened."
The teen went on to say, "We were friends and Dom was my soulmate." "I wish I had the power to take away all of your pain. Thank you to my family for all your love and support. "I love you all so very much."
Shirilla is expected to serve at least 15 years in prison. Judge Nancy Margaret Russo, who has no relation to the victim Dominic Russo, believes that the parole board may extend the teen's sentence.
The sentencing took place Monday afternoon in Cleveland. Court room cameras captured the young woman looking distraught while her crimes and punishments were being read out loud.
The family of the victims asked the judge Russo for the sentences to be consecutive, with Shirilla receiving a maximum 30 years at life.
The judge stated, "I know that this pain is causing me to want to give the most severe sentence." "But I don’t believe it would be an acceptable sentence because I believe Mackenzie won't be out of prison in 15 years."
Shirilla has been charged with four counts each of murder, felonious assault and aggravated vehicular manslaughter, as well as drug possession and possessing criminal instruments in the deaths of Dominic Russo and Davion flanagan.
She was found guilty last week of all counts at a Cuyahoga Court of Common Pleas.
