Christmas is just around the corner and many people consider it their favorite holiday. Some Florida residents feel more Grinch-like with recent news. One HOA (homeowners association) has imposed some extremely strict rules regarding when you can put up Christmas lights in Florida. One homeowner was fined for setting up Christmas lights too early.
It's beginning to feel a lot like...Fines
The Moffa family, from Westchase in Florida, doesn't hide their love of Christmas. They put up their Christmas lights as soon as the days are shorter and the weather gets colder. It was November 6th in this instance. Although some may think that it is a bit early for many, people can still celebrate the holidays in their own way.
The local homeowners' association felt differently than the Moffa families and made it clear. A letter was sent to the Moffa family, shocking them with fine print that wasn’t exactly what they wanted for Christmas.
Pay to Play
In summary, the letter stated that the lights had been put up too soon. The Moffas' HOA informed them that failing to remove the lights would lead to a $100 fine per day up to Thanksgiving. The fine is now $1,000. It could have been as high as $1,900. This is a large sum to spend on Christmas cheer.
Michael Moffa, father of the family commented that "Right before Christmas," who could possibly be a grinch for giving this out? With the holidays and the pandemic I believe the children want something more appealing to look at.
Since he couldn't do it himself, he hired a company to install the lights. The only time the company was available was before Thanksgiving. The Moffa family offered to pay $100 per day to offset the inconvenience to neighbors and countered with a proposal to keep the lights on. However, their counteroffer was rejected.
Season's Beats
We can understand his position, but the HOA claims that they are trying to prevent people from leaving their lights on all year. This is something some people find very distressing. This is one of those situations where the decision rests with each individual. You must follow the rules if you live in an HOA. Some people will argue that it is a "Grinch position", while others will insist it is essential.
It is, therefore, just as divisive as and as polarizing in 2021.
