How Mama June's Husband Handles All the 'Hateful' Comments About Their Relationship (Exclusive)

How Mama June's Husband Handles All the 'Hateful' Comments About Their Relationship (Exclusive)

The reality star and husband discuss why they were so eager to get married. They also talk about how she proposed when he was still in jail, and what his family thinks of him appearing on television.

Mama June Shannon, Justin Stroud and their fans on social media don't always reciprocate the love they feel for one another.

They married in March 2022 in a courthouse ceremony, six months after they began dating. She kept the news from her daughters and fans until she finally revealed it. Both met each other while seeking treatment for drug addiction. They tied the knot in a large ceremony earlier this year with her family.

Stroud says he regrets their first marriage in tonight's premiere of "Mama June Family Crisis." He said he felt "emotionally messed-up" when he accepted the proposal while he sat in jail. June spoke with TooFab before the episode to explain why she felt rushed to get married, and Stroud explained his concerns after receiving "hateful comments" from fans.

"I knew that it was the right thing for me. I knew it was the right thing to do and all I wanted to do was get married. "I was very excited about it," explained she. "I knew he had a few cold feet." "I think he had a few cold feet."

"You want it right. "Especially being thrown in to the situation I was thrown into, and being on television," he said. "I didn’t want anyone to say that I was there for the wrong reason because it didn’t start out like that," he said.

Stroud explained that June's status as a "reality star" had nothing to do his attraction. He said, "I understand that it is part of her. If I want to be there, I need to be here too."

He continued, "But I really was worried about it in the beginning because people are hateful." There were a lot moving parts. I didn't want people to think I was only in it for money, fame, or a TV show.

June told her that he had another proposal planned and was hoping to propose while they were in South Florida where she was recovering. When he was "locked up", she thought to herself "F---it!" "I asked him only while he was jailed," June said.

Stroud has had to adjust to the spotlight more than ever before, thanks to their quick marriage and relationship. He said it was a challenge after living away from the public eye. Shannon, a television personality since 2012's "Toddlers & Tiaras", was able to give him some advice.

"I told him to just be himself, and not worry about the cameras. Just be yourself. She said, "Don't worry what people say." When he started posting on social media, and went live, he let that get to his head. I said, "You've got to stop reading all the negative comments." "I still get negative comments on my posts 12 years later. I don't even read them."

June said that she used to "fightback" and "go against everybody" when she started reality TV. She came to realize that the haters, "really didn’t know who [she] was and that’s what I had explain to him." She continued, "Those people aren't even aware of who you are. They're only sitting in front of a computer, drinking their haterade."

Justin said that he can now accept some negativity that comes with being public, but that "you need to be used to it when you've not been there before and you're thrust into the spotlight." He said that he has learned to cope with criticism, and "it doesn't bother me anymore." But he still highlighted how "people post some hateful things on social media."

Justin told TooFab that Stoud's parents were also shocked to see him on TV.

June said that her husband's aunt, sister, and brother-in law were all "huge" fans of the show. They were "really surprised" when he first met June and even dated her. She added that his family would also be appearing on the show in this season. "They were all shocked by the cameras so they ended up in the reality world as well."

"Mama Jane: Family Crisis", the new season, premieres on Friday, May 5, at 9 PM ET/PT.
