"Somebody didn’t protect my friend."
A lot of people were under the bus for FX's and Hulu’s New York Times documentary "Malfunction" -- and now, one of them is back.
The Doc reexamined Janet Jackson's and Justin Timberlake’s 2003 Super Bowl half-time show. This show ended with Janet's naked nipple being exposed on live TV.
According to Salli Frattini (Senior Vice President of MTV), Janet and Wayne Scot Lukas, went rogue after costumes were approved. They spent money on new fabric, and a starburst Nipple cover at last minute. She claimed that Timberlake arrived at the stadium on the day of the performance and was taken to Janet's dressing room for a brief conversation with Wayne.
She said that her instincts led me to believe there had been a private conversation between wardrobe stylists, artists, and someone believed this would be a good idea. However, it ended up backfiring."
Lukas did not appear in the documentary, but he said that he was approached by Access Hollywood to be a part of the project. Janet asked him to decline because he wanted to keep it to himself. Access asked him to share his story after he claimed he had received death threats.
He explained that he was working as a worker for hire and was required to perform the job. If I'm working with someone who is a dancer, they must be able to wear a costume that doesn't fall apart. I stand by my story. I did exactly what was asked of me, for the job I was hired for. If I had ever hurt Janet, I wouldn’t have worked for Janet six years after the Super Bowl. That day I would have been fired.
He blamed producers for not making the cameras black before the naked breast was shown on TV.
"A breast movement is a movement in which a breast or a part of the body is out. This was not what you were supposed to be able to see. It was not supposed to be lingering for so long on something they claim was a terrible thing. He claimed that they were supposed to go black. "You were supposed get the idea that 'I'm going to have you naked by end of this song', but nobody was supposed be naked. That's something I have never done. Someone didn't push that button. Someone didn't protect my friend."
Access was denied the account by Fattini, who stated that it was a false statement, citing all my comments written and broadcast.
Wayne stated that Timberlake and he "haven’t spoken since he blaming me" for the downfall. "[He] walked off the stage and said that it was just a wardrobe malfunction. We all want to give each other something to think about. The stylist said, "He invented that phrase."
"Wardrobe malfunction? He said, "Wardrobe malfunction?" "I used to be a professional stylist. I earned $10,000 per day back then. I can't fail."
Lukas said that he had spoken to Jackson since the documentary aired, and she allegedly advised him not speak with the media. "Lukas don’t talk to anyone, just let it go. He said that we'll handle this in January. She likely meant her A&E documentary "Janet," which will drop January 2022.
