"We were all shaken."
Jeremy O. Harris, playwright, shares a story about Adele who attended one of his plays. And how she allegedly left long before even began.
The Tony Award nominee for Best Tony Award Posts a 14-tweet tweet detailing the night Adele went to see "Daddy" on Broadway back in 2019. It covered the entire experience, from the moment he heard that Adele was interested in seeing the play to the moment he found out that she had left just 10 minutes before curtain.
Harris, 32, raised the topic on Saturday, one day after Adele's hit single "Easy On Me" was released.
"STORYTIME": As we stream #EasyOnMe, I received a call from my agent advising me that Adele needed 6 tickets TO SEE a performance of my play Daddy: a melodrama. Harris started the long Twitter thread with a humorous GIF along each tweet.
"As an Adele Stan, I knew a lot about Adele Stan...her time at Brit school, her love for silly British comedies, and so on. I WAS UNAWARE THAT SHE LOVED OFF-BROADWAYQUEER THEATRE . He continued. "I told my agent TO OBVI and TO CALL theatre to inquire how many seats were available."
Harris noted that his play was sold out that night and that Adele needed six seats for the show. Harris said that he told them to "figure something out". They did, thankfully.
Harris wrote that "no play is ever sold out until curtain" for anyone who has worked in NYC plays. Just like I thought they were holding seats in the house for a friend who was not even coming to see it. We bought her the tickets."
Harris stated that he and Danya Taymor, the play's director began to "freak-out" after they had "been still green theatremakers who've had some brush with the kind of dream celeb shout-outs in support of their work that can potentially be life-changing." He said, "But ADELE IS ADELE, and this was enormous."
Harris said that he and Taymor didn't know what to say to the cast. But Hari Nef, star of "Daddy", found out and text him asking if Adele was coming. He joked that Nef and his fellow star "Daddy" Alan Cumming "in equal measures always knew the tea before its ever been drank."
"We said yes. It was then leaked. Then it was leaked. Harris said that every actor went backstage four hours before curtain. Harris also recalled that Taymor and he were backstage together with the cast. He claimed that Adele's security had to check the whole theatre for best exits and entrances.
Harris continued his thread by saying that everyone started "freaking out", 30 minutes before the show began, when they heard Adele was arriving. Harris said that Taymor and he were updated by the usher about Adele, which included the sad news that Adele had apparently left.
He tweeted, "Danya is with me and I decide to play cool." "Receiving little bits of information from a sweet usher: 'She just came in'?' 'She is sitting in the middle, she seems happy'?' Her security just bought her water'?'She realizes that she doesn't have any program. 'Wait...she's...she's leaving!'"
"That's right... she left. Just 10 minutes before the show began !!!" Harris wrote.
Harris claims that Adele had an issue with the swimming pool on-stage. He recalled that Danya and he ran to check on what was going on. "The usher was shocked. She asked me what the smell was. I replied that it was real. Then, she asked how long it had been ...'".
Harris said, "So I should tell you that when I wrote Daddy, i tried to be as true to 19tj [sic]-century melodramas as possible, including the run time." It took 2h45 with 2 intermissions. It was easy to understand why someone might be interested in seeing a play but she didn't get all the enjoyment.
It seems that the hangover insinuation comes from the fact that Adele was seen partying with Jennifer Lawrence at an NYC gay bar on the same weekend.
"I emailed her friends to ask if she would like to go, but she was already leaving for Europe!" He said, recalling that "We were all shaken." I sat down on one of the 6 seats she occupied and watched the show, laughing then crying as usual.
Harris shared that he "vowed" Adele to attend one of his plays and to "become his friend."
Harris closed his thread by asking his Twitter followers to help him get Adele on board to see his tweets. He also asked them to "remember" she allegedly left his show, so he can invite Adele to his production, "Slave Play," as well as "Daddy."
"So RT, Like and Comment. Tag Adele to tell her that she owes you! Adele, do you want to see a play? ???" He wrote.
Harris, who wrote the Twitter thread-turned film "Zola", said that "Also, I'm better at adapting tweet thread storytimes than I am writing them but it was still cute. ALSO, STREAM @ZolaMovie
TooFab reached out to Adele's representatives for comment but has not heard back.
