Couric also said she heard the whispers about Lauer's alleged indecent behavior as co-anchors at Today.
Katie Couric stated that she felt initially sympathetic towards Matt Lauer, her former "Today", co-anchor after he was fired for sexual misconduct.
Couric has revealed, in excerpts from her upcoming book "Going There", the support texts she claimed she sent Lauer after the 2017 scandal.

She claimed that she had texted him "I am broken" "I love and care deeply about you. I'm here. If you would like to speak, please let me know. You will have better days in the future.
Couric wrote that Lauer responded with a blowing kiss Emoji.
Lauer was fired by "Today" in November 2017 after a woman colleague filed a detailed complaint against him for inappropriate sexual behavior. After Lauer's dismissal, multiple women made sexual misconduct claims against him.
Couric stated that she was worried about Lauer's "awful" actions, despite learning of his "awful acts." She called him a "decent" man and said that she felt "heartless" to leave him. He had been there for me literally for so many years.
Couric stated that Lauer was an "excellent professional friend, a good friend and a predator" after she realized it.
Although the scandal was not shocking to the journalist, she claimed that she heard whispers about Lauer's alleged inappropriate behavior during her time as his "Today” co-anchor.
She recalls hearing rumors about her husband's wife calling the control room to inquire about the number of a TV anchor that she believed was having an affair with her husband.
Couric also said that another female producer confided to her about an email Lauer sent asking her for help. He wanted her to "butter up" him using her thighs, and asked her to wear a "skirt" to his office.
Couric wrote that Lauer's behavior was "gross" and she did not address the matter because it was "nobody's business."
She added, "A culture that doesn't ask-don't tell where everything goes and everything did."

According to reports, Lauer wasn’t the only celebrity Couric was referring to. She also attacked Prince Harry, Deborah Norville and Martha Stewart in her book. She appeared to be pursuing Diane Sawyer, alleging that their morning show rivalry had gotten so out of control that Couric once declared, "This woman must stop!"
She said, "I loved getting under Diane’s skin,"
Couric also criticized Sawyer's interview with Whitney Houston. He said, "There was a very fine distinction between a revealing interview, and the exploitation troubled, often traumatized persons in service of tawdry sound bites and sensational sound bits (e.g. Diane looking down on Whitney Houston about eating disorders, drug use, and so forth. This resulted in the famous comeback, 'crack it whack
