Katie Couric was an icon of culture after anchoring Today over 15 years. But now, some feel she is "ruining" her legacy with her memoir Going There. Although the book is due to be published on October 26, leaked parts of the memoir have caused a stir among Couric's former Today colleagues. Some are speaking out now, including Deborah Norville and Ashleigh Banfield, who were singled out by the former anchor.
Katie Couric Shocks With Memoir Claims
Although it is still not released, Katie Couric’s memoir Going there has created quite a stir among the TV journalism industry, including some of Couric’s former coworkers on Today. Couric wrote about Deborah Norville (an anchor Couric replaced in 1991) and Ashleigh Banfield (a former NBC reporter). Couric stated that Norville was difficult to relate to because of her "relentless perfection".
Couric, a journalist who worked for Today on the subject, admitted that she thought Ashleigh Banfield's help would be "self-sabotage." She also said that her father had told anyone listening that she was going replace him. These confessions shocked many in the industry, including a senior news producer who used to work with Couric, and who spoke with the New York Post. The producer stated, "Nobody can understand Katie's actions."
Deborah Norville 'Stunned' And 'Hurt'
Norville spoke out about Couric's claims to the Post as well, saying that she was "really too shocked and, frankly speaking, hurt to comment." Banfield on the other side, however, wasn't shy.
Banfield claimed that Couric's claim that her father had said she would replace the veteran anchor was misleading. Banfield said that her "senile” father was in a care facility at the time. He had commented on a report that he hoped Banfield would get "a desk job similar to Katie's".
Ashleigh Banfield is 'Gobsmacked!
She continued, saying, "Her words really have hit me hard. She was my North Star. She was my North Star. She was the greatest morning show host. "I'm absolutely stunned."
Banfield's host asked Couric if she was involved in her career being "derail" without providing any explanation. "NBC left me brokenhearted. She explained that I was at the top in 2002. "But as quickly as I rose, my career was halted and I was given no explanation. They took my office, desk, phone, and computer. They didn't tell me why. It was the most difficult mystery. "I was intrigued when I read about Katie's comments.
Although there is no evidence that Couric was involved in Banfield's career failures, it's clear that Couric never cared about helping younger women. It is unclear whether Katie Couric's memoir, which contains some shocking revelations, will alter her pop culture legacy. It is certain that Couric's book on recollections will be an eye-opening, fascinating read.
