The man said he "observed" shadows in his yard and retrieved his firearm. He then began shooting at "people who were running away". His own nephew, it was reported, was among the children playing on the property.

According to Louisiana police, a 14-year old girl who sustained a gunshot to the back her head while playing hide-and-seek was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

According to a press statement, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office stated that David Doyle, 58 years old, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and 4 counts of assault with a gun. He also faces an illegal discharge charge for an incident which occurred on his property May 7.

The Office's Violent Crimes Detectives investigated after police were called on Sunday to Doyle's house in reference to an alleged shooting. They discovered that "several youths were playing hide-and-seek in the area, and were hiding on neighbor's land."

Doyle told detectives that he had "observed the shadows outside of his house" before picking up his gun and walking outside to observe "people fleeing from his property." According to reports, he told police "he started shooting at them and hit the girl unknowingly."

The shooting occurred at the dead end of a road where only three people lived: Doyle, a family member of the victim, and a close relative. Local resident told The Daily Beast Doyle's nephew was playing hide and seek with the victim at the time of her shooting.

Families told 7News the girl is "fine and recovering" after the incident. Doyle, however, remains in custody at the Calcasieu Correctional Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
