Make Holiday Prep Less Stressful With This Veteran Interior Designer’s Pro Tips

A Lizzie McGraw-designed table setting

Lizzie McGraw is an interior designer whose style is casual, modern, and a bit beachy. Her signature look is thoughtful, and it gives the impression that she didn't sweat a lot to create it.

Of course, someone did. McGraw knows that good design is not easy. Before it became one of California's most popular design areas, her home was located on Los Angeles's Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

McGraw's first book has been published. She owns Tumbleweed & Dandelion which is her design shop. After more than two decades in the industry, McGraw now owns it. Creative Design: Livable and Loveable Spaces features her favorite textiles, furniture, accessories, and other items.

HOLIDAY SHOPING: Sending Holiday Gifts Your Loved One Will Always Remember

McGraw was a great person to talk to about her warm home and shop, as well as her tips for how we can adopt her relaxed style in our homes during the holidays.

How would you advise readers to achieve your home's look?

I always advise clients to get rid of anything that isn't necessary in their homes. While I believe in beauty, it is possible to have much of the good things.

Are you feeling overwhelmed when it comes to getting your house ready for guests?

When getting the house ready to host guests, I try to keep it simple. Make sure you have easy-to-prepare food. Most guests like light food during the holidays.

Similar to the previous question, what are some of the most important things you can do in your home that will set a festive atmosphere?

I rely on fresh greens because of their wonderful holiday scent and easy-to-use ambiance. They create a festive atmosphere. It can be placed in a vase, or hanging by twine on a front door. This sets the tone. A candle that is gentle and beautiful is also a must. Tumbleweed and Dandelion's Fraiser Fir candle sells quickly at holidays.

How can you decorate your home for the holidays?

"Our home is simple, functional, and organic. Our home is simple, functional, and organic. Fall is a major season in the world. It is a beautiful and peaceful way to relax in your home.

What are your ideas for decorating the shop?

We like to sell handmade and vintage ornaments in fall, but we don't rush. We have baskets filled with ornaments, surrounded by pumpkin-shaped dough bowls. We have seasonal candle scents available for you to pick from, and our music sets the tone!

Do you have a color scheme that you stick to ? Or does it change from year to year.

We are open to changes, so we say yes. While we maintain a neutral vibe, we now have fun napkins with fall pastels for Thanksgiving. We are also feeling a little more pink than red!

Which Christmas products are you most proud to sell?

Our candles are hand-made. They are made by us, so we always add new scents every year. Orange clove will be the star of this year's show!

Which non-traditional Christmas decorations do you keep coming back to year after year.

We are more family/holiday than Christmas so we love to fill our baskets with pinecones we collect on our trips. They can be sprayed or left in their natural state.

Are you more inclined to buy artificial or real greenery? Do you prefer to have several trees around the house or a single tree family?

"We are a replant tree person." We buy several potted trees each season and then replant them.

Are you a hostess during the holidays? How can you make your holiday party more festive by setting up a holiday table?

"Cooking is fun with my husband, who is a chef. He prepares the meal, and I create the atmosphere and set the tables. Beautiful table settings are what I enjoy, so we use napkins tied with twine or rosemary.

"If I have time, we can wrap a baguette or send each guest off with Jonathan's homemade toffee. Our team always finds time to spend quality time with their friends and colleagues."
