In January, LaBeouf split with LaBeouf weeks after FKA Twigs filed suit against him alleging mental abuse and sexual battery.
Margaret Qualley raised concerns about FKA Twigs' allegations of abuse against Shia LaBeouf (with whom they were both previously dated).
In an interview with Harper's Bazaar the actress spoke out about her support for Twigs, born Tahliah Barrnett, after LaBeouf filed a lawsuit in December 2020 alleging mental abuse and sexual battery.
Qualley and the actor split in January. A month later, Qualley posted an Elle cover where Twigs described the abuse. Harper's asked Qualley why she wrote the caption, "Thank You," and Qualley replied, "It was important for me that she know that I believe in her -- it's that simple."
She said that although she was not comfortable talking about her personal life, she understood her new role as Maid. She plays an emotionally abusive character in "Maid," which would raise questions about her relationship to LaBeouf.
Instead, she spoke about how she had prepared for the abuse, and her character as she endured it. She said, "Unfortunately it's so prevalent." It's true that over half of all people will experience some degree of psychological threat in a relationship at one time or another. I tried my best to understand the script and feel Alex's reality.
Barnett filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming that he knew that he had given her a sexually transmitted illness. The lawsuit also claimed that LaBeouf was guilty of "relentless abuse", including sexual battery and assault, as well as infliction emotional distress.
LaBeouf first told the New York Times, "Many of these allegations [are not true]", but he doesn't feel in a position to defend my actions." He believes that these women "owe him the opportunity to speak out publicly and take responsibility for what I did."
LaBeouf's legal team responded to her lawsuit by insisting that he "denies, in general and specifically, every allegation in [Barnett]’s Complaint, and denies that [Barnett] suffered any injury or loss as a result of any act or oversight on the part [LaBeouf], et al., and denies that [Barnett] are entitled to any relief and damages whatsoever."
