Michael Landon's daughter raises awareness about pancreatic cancer and testing in a new PSA

Michael Landon's daughter raises awareness about pancreatic cancer and testing in a new PSA

In 1991, three months after being diagnosed, the actor died from the disease.

Jen Landon, actress, is raising awareness about pancreatic carcinoma in celebration of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), the 38-year old star of "Yellowstone", teamed up to launch their Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month campaign. This encourages first-degree relatives, such as a parent, child, or sibling, to have a conversation about testing.

Landon, PanCAN ambassador, discussed the new campaign via a PSA.

She says that her father Michael Landon died from pancreatic cancer 30 years ago. He was diagnosed three months later. "November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, and this month PanCAN will be highlighting the importance of testing patients and their families."

She said, "So contact PanCAN Patient Services for three simple steps that could save your life: Talk to, test, and take control. Your efforts will make a huge difference."

Landon spoke to PanCAN in a press release. He stated that "When I began having my own health problems and knowing my family history with the disease I decided it was time to take control of myself and get tested to determine my personal risk."

She shared with us that her father was given only one month to live when he was first diagnosed. He survived for three months after being diagnosed. Michael died in 1991 at the age 54, while his daughter was seven years old.

The PanCAN press release explains that in the past, people were considered more likely to develop pancreatic cancer if they had two or more relatives diagnosed. Genetic testing was then recommended. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), however, has updated its guidelines to say that it is important to understand one's genetic risk after only one family member has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

PanCAN states that the 5-year survival rate of pancreatic cancer is just 10%. PanCAN also stated that more than 60,000 Americans will be diagnosed with the disease and 48,000 will die. For increasing survival rates, early detection is key. Pancreatic cancer is the third most common cause of death from cancer in the United States.

Many celebrities and politicians have been affected by pancreatic cancer. These include Aretha Franklin, Patrick Swayze, and Steve Jobs.

Next week will be the one year anniversary of Alex Trebek's death. Trebek was 80 years old and had been fighting stage 4 cancer for over a decade.

Last year saw the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a feminist icon and liberal who was also afflicted by the disease. This was just one of many cancer battles she had throughout her life.

Recently, Willie Garson, the actor of "Sex and the City", died in September after a private battle.
