The driver said, "I feel really dizzy. I might have pull over." He then fell unconscious behind the wheel of the bus, which was full of children.
After the bus driver fell asleep on the road, a seventh-grader from Warren in Michigan took action to prevent a serious accident.
Warren Consolidated Schools released a video from Wednesday showing the driver fanning her head with a hat, before turning on the radio in the car to inform the Transportation Office that she "felt really dizzy." She "might need to pull over." She then begins to shake, and appears to let go of the wheel as she falls unconscious.
According to Superintendent Robert Livernois the bus started to veer towards "what would have essentially been oncoming traffic," when Dillon Reeves, who was sitting about five rows in front of the vehicle, and the other children on the full-bus noticed that something was amiss.
You can see the video below at 8:28.
"Oh s---, oh s---, oh s---!" One of the kids yells, then Dillon jumps in the frame, grabbing the wheel and pressing the brakes to stop the vehicle as the other children scream. "Call 911 now!" He then shouted repeatedly over the chaos.
Two Good Samaritans reportedly helped the kids - one helped Dillon and the driver, while the other helped them get off the bus. The bus was not damaged.
Dillon's dad said that his family is "very proud" of Reeves and called him "a little hero" during a press event celebrating Reeves actions on Thursday. He said, "He has been driving on my lap, pulling into driveways, since he was about four years old." He's an excellent driver."
"A policeman called me, and my initial response was 'What in the hell did he do'?" He continued. They were saying, "No, no no, this was a great decision. Your son is a hero.
He told his mother that he was able to drive a bus because he "watched her every day." Dillon did not speak at the press conference.
Livernois stated, "In the 35 years I have been an educator, this was a remarkable act of maturity and courage on his part." "I'm not sure that it could have been any better." It was an excellent day when Dillon, our anchor, took care of the business in the bus.
The driver was still being tested and observed in hospital as of Thursday. Livernois said that the driver, in accordance with law, will be required to submit to a drug test. He added, "We will continue to support this driver who is one of our best."
