Nine people were killed in Las Vegas after a speeding car ran red light

Seven victims belonged to the same family.

Police say that nine people were killed in a terrible Las Vegas crash, including the driver who ran an red light at more than 100 MPH.

Seven victims belonged to the same family. They ranged in age from 35-55.

According to North Las Vegas Police officers, the Dodge Challenger was speeding towards an intersection on Commerce Street around 3:00 on Saturday. Witnesses said that it didn't stop at a red light.

Alexander Cuevas, Public Information Officer, stated that the vehicle struck several vehicles and caused a chaotic scene.

One of the vehicles was a white Toyota Sienna minivan that carried seven relatives: Yeshua Mejia (5; Adrian Zacarias (10; Lluvia Daylenn Zacarias 13; Bryan Axel Zacarias (15; Bryan Axel Zacarias (15); Gabriel Mejia Barrera (23; David MejiaBarrera (25) and Jose Zacarias Caldera (35) All of them perished.

Gary Dean Robinson (59 years old driver of the Challenger) and his unidentified 50 year-old passenger also died in the accident.

Six cars were involved in the pileup. The initial crash pushed the vehicles over the median and into the oncoming traffic. The majority of the cars ended in crashing through a fence into a vacant lot.

Six other people sustained injuries, some of which were life-threatening.

The speed limit for this stretch of road is 35 MPH.

Although speeding was evidently a factor in the accident, investigators are not yet able to determine if the driver was distracted or impaired.

Officer Cuevas stated that it was the most serious mass casualty traffic accident in department history. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal it was the most fatal event in Las Vegas Valley since October 2017's mass shooting.

Pamela Goynes Brown, North Las Vegas Councilwoman, called the incident "a terrible and unnecessary loss, due in large part to a careless, sinister act."

Erlinda Zacarias, a GoFundMe contributor, stated that she had lost four children and two stepchildren as well as a brother.

She wrote, "I lost all of my family, my children, 7 of those lives lost. There are no words that can describe my pain and suffering. My brother and 2 stepsons lost their lives. Also, me and my husband are so in pain."

It had raised $93k as of Monday morning.

Jacqueline Gravatt, North Las Vegas Police Chief, stated that the National Transportation Safety Board was also conducting an investigation due to the scale of the tragedy.
