Papa Johns Making A Major Change In Bid To Attract Customers

Papa John's sign outside of restaurant

Papa John's will be a different place in 2022. They hope that this will help them attract new customers. After John Schnatter, the company founder, has been resigned from his role as CEO, the national pizza chain will undergo a brand overhaul that will include a new logo for their stores and a new store design.

John Schnatter, Papa Johns founder, resigned in 2018 amid controversy

Fox Business reports that Schnatter, Papa Johns' CEO, resigned in 2018, amid claims that he was "set-up" by the board of directors and executives at marketing firm Laundry Service.

Schnatter was accused in a controversy over using a racial slur on a conference call. Louis Freeh, former FBI director, conducted a third-party investigation and found that Schnatter's remarks were not intended or can reasonably be understood to reflect any racial prejudice, bias, or disrespect for African Americans.

Freeh concluded that Schnatter did not use a racial insult. Freeh stated that the facts of this case were "drowned out" by sensationalized mischaracterizations in the mainstream media and social media.

They must distance themselves from their founder

Schnatter quit the company he started despite the findings of the investigation. Papa Johns has also distanced itself from Schnatter, the former CEO who was a regular guest in national advertising campaigns.

They are doing this by removing the apostrophe in the Papa Johns logo.

A Focus On Ingredients

In 2022, the Papa Johns brand rebranding will be gradually implemented. New stores will feature an open floor plan and updated kitchens. Self-service at the pick up counter is also available.

The updated store decor features the familiar Papa Johns logo colors in new hues. It focuses on their premium pizza ingredients. The visuals feature a bright tomato red and a fresh basil green as well as a fluffy off-white dough.

Max Wetzel, Papa Johns Chief Commercial Officer, stated in a statement that they are constantly improving the Papa Johns experience across all touchpoints. He also said that he was true to the things that got them to where they are today and continuing to strive to improve and grow.

John Schnatter is not impressed

Schnatter responded to the redesign by releasing a statement, saying that it was "gratifying" for his company to see that many of the concepts he had worked on over the past 34 years, such as high-quality ingredients and customer service, logo colors and slogans, were still supporting Papa John's success. Schnatter was not happy with the logo change.

Schnatter stated that the company should not be obsessed with Papa John's brand logo and other irrelevant changes, but instead focus on making high-quality Papa Johns pizzas consistently. They can't have Papa Johns without Papa John, no matter how hard they try.
