Procter & Gamble Co. has recalled over 15 types deodorant products after it was found that they contained benzene. This chemical is linked to cancer. This recall was announced over Thanksgiving weekend. It caused Secret and Old Spice products on shelves to be pulled.

Certain products may contain cancer-linked chemicals

According to the company, samples of aerosol-based deodorant were tested positive for benzene. Experts in health have found that repeated exposure to this chemical can lead to an increase in cancer risk. P&G recall notice states that benzene exposure can lead to cancers including blood cancer and leukemia. This can also be dangerous for those who are already suffering from anemia.

The recall notice from P&G and the Food and Drug Administration states that the deodorants recalled are likely to contain very little benzene. This means that users won't be exposed to any health risks. According to the notice, benzene can be inhaled, applied to the skin or orally. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company started testing for this chemical in their products after being notified by other manufacturers that benzene was found in spray-on sunscreens earlier this year.

The company stated that it had not been notified of any adverse events and was conducting the recall "out of an abundance of caution".

Products should be disposed of 'immediately'

These deodorants were sold online and in retail stores. They were most likely made recently based on their expiration dates of 2023. P&G is asking anyone who purchased the recalled deodorants to immediately dispose of them. P&G is offering a full refund for those who purchased the deodorant.
