Queen Elizabeth suffered a heartbreaking loss in 2015. Ann Fortune Fitzroy, Duchess and Mistress of the Robes of Queen Elizabeth, has died. She was 101 years of age.
Duchess of Grafton's Royal Duties
Fitzroy started her career in the royal household in 1953 as a Lady in the Bedchamber. She was made Mistress of the Robes in 1967 and held this position until her death. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, only two other people were granted this title.
She would have been the senior lady responsible for the jewellery and clothing of the queen. Fitzroy would have also been responsible for arranging the attendance of other ladies-inwaiting and performing various duties at state ceremonies.
The Duchess de Grafton was with the queen during her travels around the globe, including visits to Nigeria, France and Morocco. In 1980, she was awarded the Dame Grand Cross the Royal Victorian Order. The Queen bestows this award on her for her services to the sovereign.
Fitzroy was born 1920. She worked as a nurse before marrying Hugh Fitzroy. He was the Earl of Euston and later became the 11th Duke de Grafton. They had five children together, including Lady Virginia Mary Elizabeth FitzRoy who is one of Queen Elizabeth's goddaughters.
Royal Family Still in Upheaval
Fitzroy's passing comes only months after Prince Philip's death at 99 in April 2021. He was married to the queen for 73 years. This makes him the longest-serving royal consort.
This also comes at a time when the royal family is going through a lot of turmoil. Prince Charles is under fire right now after it was revealed that he was the one who made comments about the skin color of Prince Harry's and Meghan Markle’s future children. This shocking revelation was made by the couple in an Oprah interview.
According to Christopher Andersen's book Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives William, Kate and Harry, the prince asked Camilla Parker Bowles about the appearance of the children of the Duke and Duchess. Camilla said, "Well, absolutely stunning, I'm sure." Charles, however, replied, "I mean... what do you think their children might look like?"
According to reports, Harry, Markle and the rest the royal family are starting to melt, but the couple won't be celebrating Christmas with the rest of them. Some are asking if Queen Elizabeth will have to celebrate Christmas this year because of the bad press and her poor health.
