Rita Moreno has been a legend among legends. The EGOT winner is a cultural icon at the border of 90. She also had a friendship with Marlon Marko and he offered her some very interesting advice.
Early, early start
Recently, Moreno sat down to talk about her entire career with inStyle. At four years old, she began dancing and was able to move to the United States one year later. She was determined to continue her studies and enrolled in dance school. Soon, she was performing in front of audiences and dreamed of appearing on the big screen.
Elizabeth Taylor was her first idol. Moreno claims that it didn't occur "to me that her skin is lighter and that she has violet eyes." Our age was similar, and she had so much success, so my mother and I bought a waist-cincher and did our hair and eyebrows just like hers. Louis B. Mayer, MGM's head of production, called her "Spanish Elizabeth Taylor" when she first met him. She was immediately hired.
There are tons of roles
Although her early films did not set Moreno ablaze, she did play a significant role in Singin' in The Rain. "I took any part that was offered because there weren’t many Latina roles back then. They'd instead ask me to be a Native American, an Indian, or an Arabian." she says. She felt undervalued and turned to Brando.
Brando and Moreno dated off and on through the fifties, sixties. Quincy Jones said later that the Godfather Star would sleep with anyone including James Baldwin, Richard Pryor and Marvin Gaye. Brando said to Moreno that he needed to see a therapist in any case. Moreno laughs, but insists that he was right.
Support through Work
Moreno found life-changing help through therapy. She won an Academy Award for her next role in West Side Story, making her the first Latina to receive this award. Her community was thrilled and she felt amazing. Moreno, who meets Angelina Jolie and other people touched by the film's impact, says that she still finds it amazing.
She's back to the original
Steven Spielberg asked Moreno to assist with the remake of West Side Story. She thought it was funny: "How can I function in this business for almost 60 years?" Spielberg wanted to correct the mistakes of the original film in terms of representation and Moreno believed the project was in good hands.
West Side Story has received rave reviews. Moreno stars in it and produces it. Brando's advice can be useful for anyone, and it certainly helped Moreno.
