Karl Lagerfeld is a controversial figure in fashion

This week, it was revealed that Karl Lagerfeld would be the theme of the next Met Gala. Lagerfeld, who died in 2019, was the creative director of Chanel and Fendi as well as his own label.

His designs weren't the only thing that made him famous. Lagerfeld was often criticized for comments about women's weight, Muslims and victims of sexual violence. Many are already scathing about the Met Gala committee's decision not to honor Lagerfeld at this year’s event.

Jamela Jamil: "Why is this who we celebrate?"

The Good Placeactress Jamela Jamil responded online to the announcement of the theme "Karl Lagerfeld - A Line of Beauty." "A line of fatphobia, racism and hatred of the Me Too movement," Jamil captioned. She also included screenshots of Lagerfeld's comments. "Excited to watch all the women celebrate this great lover"

Jamil also shared her thoughts on Instagram, writing: "This man... was indeed, super talented but used his platform in such a hateful manner, mostly towards women so repeatedly and up to the last years his life, showing neither remorse nor offering any atonement to groups he targeted... there was no explanation."

She said, "Why is THIS the one we celebrate when there are so MANY AMAZING designers out there that aren't racist white men?" What happened to all of our principles and "advocacy"? You can't stand for justice in these areas and then go to the celebration of someone who revels in his public disdain for marginalized persons.

Kat Tenbarge tweeted that Karl Lagerfeld had defended sexual assault against models and helped to stigmatize coming forward in years after being assaulted. Because there is no penalty for sexual assault defense, he will be honored next year as "fashion's biggest evening" theme.

These criticisms have not been addressed by any member of the event's committee, so it appears that the 2023 Met Gala will proceed as planned. It seems that many celebrities may reconsider accepting their invitation.
