Police have used photos of a male model to track down a catfishing killer. They never even told the owner.
The Indiana State Police posted several photos of a male model Monday to appeal to the public. They believe that his pictures were used to lure two teenage girls to their deaths.
In a release, they stated that the man pictured was not an individual of interest in the case. They didn't let him know that his photos were going to be used in a case of murder, despite knowing his identity.
TooFab spoke with the model, who is ironically a police officer. He isn't happy.
The case of unsolved murder involves the 2017 murders, 14-year old Liberty German and Abigail Williams. Their bodies were found on Valentine's Day near Monon High Bridge outside their hometown of Delphi.
Police released two grainy photos showing a suspect walking along the abandoned railroad bridge. They also provided sketches that were based on a cellphone video. However, nobody was ever arrested.
On Monday, nearly five years after the murders occurred, Indiana police said that they had found an online profile named anthony_shots which they believed may be related to the case.
They released that the profile was used on social media apps including Instagram and Snapchat from 2016 to 2017. "The fake anthony_shots profile featured images of a male model who portrayed himself as extremely wealthy and possessing many sports cars."
"The creator of this fictitious profile used these information to communicate with juvenile females in order to request nude images, get their addresses and try to meet them." Below are images of the male model as well as images from the fake anthony_shots profile that was sent to underage girls.
Seven selfies were taken by the model. There were also a few screengrabs by the account. These included photos of a garage full of luxury sports cars and an online shopping basket from Gucci and Louis Vuitton containing thousands of dollars worth of designer clothing.
"We have identified the male in the images that were used to create the anthony_shots profile. Police insist that the male in the photos is and not an individual of interest in the investigation. "Detectives are looking for information about the person that created the anthony_shots account."
They asked for anyone who attempted to meet, met or had any type of communication online with anthony_shots immediately to contact their tipline.
However, police did not contact the model in these photos to inform him that they would be using his images as part a murder investigation.
Vincent Kowalski is now an Alaska police officer.
"Someone sent me a screenshot from the YouTube video they made... I was like, 'There's no chance that's true," he said. "I was totally blown away."
Officer Kowalski stated that his images were used by catfishers for many years; "Grindr," Kik and all the other dating sites. He said that people use them to message girls.
He claimed he had contacted Instagram numerous times but was merely instructed to block them. He said, "They never get taken out."
Kowalski, however, has posted on his Instagram account warning people that he's not on any dating websites and that he won't accept friend requests for people he doesn’t know.
"If you think that you were talking to me via DMs, you are wrong. He advised that you are not talking to a fake in a 2019 Insta post.
Kowalski said that despite being the obvious person to ask about his pictures being catfished in the world, TooFab did not hear from any of his Indiana police colleagues.
He is now concerned for the safety of his family because of the tens of thousand views and shares of the release by police.
He said that many headlines are vague. My picture is the first thing that comes up when you Google it. My face gets blasted all over the internet. It's possible that people might believe I was involved in it."
"I talked to my wife about it... I just wish nobody crazy attempts to contact me."
Kowalski has been with the police force for four years and says he doesn't know why Indiana police didn't give him a heads-up or even reached out to him for information about past catfishers.
He said, "You would think so."
He claimed he reached out to the tipline and was even able to reach him - but he never heard back.
TooFab asked Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sergeant. Jeremy Piers asked if "known male model" was aware that his photos were being used in a murder investigation. He was informed that no further information was being shared.
He said that the photos had already been shared on social media so they didn’t have to ask permission.
The anthony_shots account is still active on Instagram, but it has been set to private.
