Jackie Kennedy Onassis is the first lady to leave a lasting legacy. She was John F. Kennedy's spouse and was well-known for her support of the arts, her impeccable style sense, and her meticulous restoration of the White House. Her work before marrying John was what led to Queen Elizabeth's 1953 coronation.

Jackie Kennedy was a reporter in her early twenties

Jackie Kennedy wasn't a Kennedy in 1953. Jacqueline Bouvier was the name of the future first lady. She worked as an "Inquiring camera girl" for the Washington Times-Herald. She was required to travel around Washington D.C. in order to get people's opinions on current events. She would then take photos of them and publish their responses to her newspaper column.

Jackie was just 23 when she received the prestigious assignment to cover Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. This was just a few months prior to her marriage to John and eight years before she would be moving into the White House. Her column, headlined "Crowd Of Americans Fill 'Bright' London," provided insight into the state of England while the country waited for its new monarch.

Ms. Bouvier stated that "the whole country is concerned about the coronation. The whole coronation and nothing else." "Every house one could see through the windows of the boat train from Southampton to London bore a photograph of Queen Elizabeth--pasted outside or in a window.... All buildings are decorated with great swoops multi-colored bunting.

Jackie Kennedy crossed paths with The Queen Twice

Future Mrs. Kennedy spoke of a shared affinity between Britain and America during that period. Their militaries had achieved a magnificent joint victory in World War II. She shared an interesting story about a London night watchman who was so happy to have American guests, he put a large American flag in front of their front windows.

Jackie would be immersed in the world of the royals again, but this time she would be the first lady of America. Eight years after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1961, Mr. Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy attended a private dinner at Buckingham Palace. The press implied that there was tension between Mrs. Kennedy and the queen.

Despite their rumored dislike, Queen Elizabeth invited Jackie back to the palace in 1962 when the First Lady was visiting her sister in London. They shared a private lunch. Jackie shared a private lunch with Jackie, telling the cameras outside that she didn't feel the need to say much other than how grateful and charming she was.

Although they were not the best of friends they did share a common bond. Both were just entering adulthood and assumed positions of power, public importance, respectively. This speaks volumes about the interconnectedness of these two important historical figures. This makes one wonder if there will be any future public figures hiding among the crowd at King Charles’ coronation next year.
