Walmart Recalls Room Spray Due to Rare Bacteria

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) works hard to ensure that American consumers are safe from harmful chemicals. After discovering a serious and rare bacteria in the ingredients of a particular aromatherapy spray, Walmart had to recall it. The CDC continues to investigate whether the bacteria may be present in other products, even though Walmart recalled it.

Walmart Recalls Which Aromatherapy Spray?

The CDC identified a bacteria called Burkholderia pseudomallei on Friday, October 22nd in an aromatherapy spray that Walmart had previously sold. The spray's name is "Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential oil Infused Aromatherapy room Spray with Gemstones."

According to the CDC report, the contaminated spray sold in 55 Walmart stores and online between February 21 and October 21, 2021. Walmart removed the remaining spray bottles from its shelves and website after the CDC declared it to be contaminated.

The CDC recommends that you follow certain steps if you have used the spray in your home. The chemicals can cause soil and water damage, so it is important that you do not dispose of the spray in regular trash.

Consumers should instead double-bag the bottle using zip-top bags and place it in a cardboard container before returning it to Walmart. Let's say someone has applied the spray to clothing or bedding. They should wash the items immediately with regular laundry detergent, and then dry them in the dryer on high.

What happens if you are infected with the Bacteria?

Melioidosis is also known as Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is a rare but serious disease. Melioidosis can be found most often in South and Southeast Asia, as well as Northern Australia, according to the CDC. The CDC believes that the Better Homes & Garden aromatherapy spray was manufactured in India.

Individuals may have different symptoms. The Center for Disease Control states that flu-like symptoms are the most common. Other symptoms of melioidosis are cough, headache, swelling, joint pains, weight loss and swelling, as well as chest pains, swelling, pain in the joints, and pain in the throat.

The CDC recommends that you immediately seek medical attention if you have had a fever or any other symptoms of melioidosis since using the Better Home & Garden spray within the last 21 days. Also, inform your doctor that you were exposed. There have been only four cases of melioidosis so far in the United States this year. Two of those patients died from the bacteria.
