Which HGTV shows pay for renovations? And how much do they spend on them?

Everybody loves to see houses undergo extreme renovations on HGTV. Many dream of being able to renovate their home, but how do you pay for it?

Who pays for the expensive renovations?

Many people assume that renovations are free. However, this is not always true. While some people are able to get a renovation done for free, most home-makeover viewers must pay the full cost. Homeowners are expected to leave the property while the work is underway. This will mean that homeowners will need to pay more for accommodation.

Participants get discounts on materials, access to experts contractors, and the ability to hire remodeling professionals, but they still have to pay the full cost of the renovation.

Jonathan Knight and Kristina Cristina, HGTV's Farmhouse Repair, take over old farmhouses and transform them into beautiful homes. The only thing viewers may not be aware of is that the show requires homeowners to have a minimum budget of $150,000 in order to take part.

Other shows like Love it or List It, and Overgrown need budgets of $75,000+. Nate & Jeremiah from Design requires that participants have a budget of $40,000-$60,000,000. Although it may seem expensive, this show is a great deal when compared to other shows.

Not All Shows Charge Big Bucks

Some shows don't require homeowners to immediately pay the money. Unsellable Homes does not require upfront funding. Instead, twin sisters Lyndsay Lamb (real estate agent) and Leslie Davis (sister), invest their own money in the homes. They pay for minor renovations to homes that have been in the market for a while. The homeowners and the pair share the profits after the house has been sold. Although the homeowner pays for the renovations, they do not have to pay the money upfront.

These shows require that participants pay a significant amount, but they also have access to some of the most skilled home-makeover professionals in the field. They get their 15 minutes fame and can also feature on a TV program. You can be one of millions of viewers who dream of appearing on HGTV's favorite shows. But make sure you have the money.
