"Marriage is not a prison for us, and I don’t recommend our path for everyone."
Will Smith spoke out about his unconventional marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith in a GQ Magazine cover story.
Although the couple's relationship has been well covered for years, July 2020 saw headlines rise after Jada revealed that she was in an "entanglement” with August Alsina. She and Will both appeared on Red Table Talk at the time to discuss what happened with Alsina, and reveal periods of non-monogamy during their marriage.
Smith speaks out about their relationship with GQ.
Smith shared his thoughts about Jada. "Jada never believed that conventional marriage .... Jada was in a traditional relationship." So she grew up in a very different way than I did. We had many discussions about what it meant to be a perfect couple. How do you interact with your partner? Monogamy was the best option for our relationship. We didn't consider monogamy the only way to be together.
Will stated that Jada and Will made the decision to be open about their show in order to avoid further scrutiny.
He explained that truth-seeking is the only way to happiness in this life. "We came to an agreement that authenticity was the freedom from fame and public scrutiny."
The author mentions that many people who saw Red Table Talk's tell-all episode likely believed Jada was "only one engaging into other sexual relationships." Smith then delicately explained that this was not the case. Smith didn't go into detail about what he did beyond their marriage.
Will stated that they have shared trust and freedom with the belief everyone has the right to make their own decisions. "Marital for us cannot be a prison. And I do not recommend this road to anyone. This road is not for everyone. However, the shared experiences and mutual support that we have received are the best definition of love.
He explained that despite the meme of him looking distraught by the conversation, he was actually just "f---ing exhausted" since he had filmed the episode at midnight.
Interview was conducted in conjunction with Smith's forthcoming memoir, "Will," and -- according to the GQ reporter -- does not even touch on "entanglement" drama. What's the reason? He explained, "It felt as if it were a whole book unto its own."
GQ's November issue hits newsstands Oct. 19, while "Will” will be available November 9th.
