Reindeer gingerbread cookie on table

A large selection of Christmas cookie cutters can have many benefits. You'll be amazed at the versatility of certain holiday cookie cutters.

These adorable reindeer cookies might seem like they took hours to create. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that it only takes a few minutes to make these adorable reindeer cookies.

It's also easier to make Christmas cookies using a premade dough such as the Nestle Toll House's holiday cookie dough or Betty Crocker’s Gingerbread Cookie Mix.

What is the secret to Christmas magic? For more tips, read on.

How to Make Gingerbread Reindeer Cookies

Start by making your gingerbread dough from scratch or mixing it up. Grab a few sheets of parchment paper once your gingerbread dough has been prepared for rolling. Roll the cookie dough to 1/4" thickness between two sheets of parchment. Remember that chilled dough will make it easier to roll; parchment paper will keep your work area clear and free of flour.

The magic begins when the dough discs have been rolled out. To cut the shapes, you can use a gingerbread men cookie cutter. The legs turn into antlers and the arms transform into ears. The head is now the face. We prefer the Wilton Gingerbread Boy Comfort Grip Cookie Cutter to an ordinary one that you can find in most shops. It is thicker and more durable than other cookie cutters, and it also has a soft rubber grip which allows for greater control.

Once the cookies have cooled, you can transform them into reindeer by baking gingerbread cookies. Now it's time to add some royal icing to finish these cookies.

Royal icing is generally made up of meringue, powdered sugar and water. However, meringue is not a common ingredient in most kitchens. Royal icing can be made with powdered sugar or corn syrup, which is a more common ingredient during holidays.

Simple Royal Icing with Powdered Sugar Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon light corn syrup
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, light corn syrup and vanilla extract. Stir until corn syrup is fully dissolved.
  2. In a medium bowl, add the powdered sugar. Mix sugar water and powdered sugar together. Stir well. You can add more water if the icing becomes too thick. You can add more powdered sugar to make the icing thicker. Decorate the cookies immediately with icing.

To apply the frosting, you can use a disposable bag or a bag with the corner cut off. Use the frosting to make simple antlers. You can also make dazzling antlers with mini pretzels.

Chocolate chips can be used for the eyes, and M&Ms in red or brown to the nose. To change the color of your reindeer, you can add gel to royal icing (such as Americolor). Decorate your reindeer with festive decorations Wilton silver or gold edible pearls that resemble jingle bells.
