Richard Sherman Pleads Guilty To Charges From Family Alternative

The free-agent N.F.L. cornerback Richard Sherman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors on Monday, resolving charges from last summer when he was arrested after police said he drunkenly crashed his car and tried to break down the door of his in-laws’ home in Redmond, Wash., a suburb outside of Seattle.

Sherman pleaded guilty to charges of negligent driving and criminal trespass, both misdemeanors, as well as an infraction of speeding in a construction zone. He was sentenced to two days in jail, which he already served, and fined $1,325. He will also have to pay a yet-to-be-determined amount of restitution to his father-in-law, as well as the Washington State Department of Transportation. As part of the agreement with prosecutors, charges of resisting arrest and malicious mischief were dropped.

Sherman will also be monitored by the court for two years, and if he violates his plea agreement, he will have to serve an additional 88 days in jail and pay more fines.

“I’m grateful for the community we have and the way people continue to accept you even though you’re a flawed human being and made a mistake,” Sherman said in court on Monday, according to The Associated Press.

His lawyer, Cooper Offenbecher, said in an email on Tuesday that Sherman “is grateful to have this matter concluded.”

“He is focused on spending time with his family, and looks forward to the next steps in his career,” Offenbecher said.

The incident that ended in the arrest of Sherman, a five-time Pro Bowler with the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers, began last July with an argument with his wife, Ashley. He then drank multiple bottles of alcohol, threatened to kill himself, drove while drunk to his in-laws’ house and tried to break down the door in search of his children, according to police statements and 911 calls. He was subdued by multiple police officers and a police dog a little after 2 a.m.

In a statement released a few days after the incident, Sherman said that he was “deeply remorseful” for his actions and that he had been “dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months.”

Sherman joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers midway through the 2021 N.F.L. season after Tom Brady recruited him to shore up the Buccaneers’ porous pass defense. But Sherman played just five regular season games before his season was ended by injuries to his calf and an Achilles’ tendon. Without him, the Buccaneers lost in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Los Angeles Rams, the eventual Super Bowl winners.

Sherman is an 11-year N.F.L. veteran, but hasn’t played in a full season since 2019, when he was named to the Pro Bowl and helped lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance.
