Joan Rivers was a comedy icon, considered by many to be a pioneer for women in the industry. Known as much for her controversial takes as for her plastic surgery, Rivers had a decades-long career in which she found success as a standup comedian, an actor, a writer, and a TV host.

Because of her numerous entertainment endeavors, Rivers was one of the most recognizable faces on TV. And because she was known for being so open about her life, it’s easy to assume the world already knows everything there is to know about her. But, like some of her stories, that’s not entirely true.
