When Hugh Hefner founded Playboy in 1953, the men’s lifestyle magazine was like nothing the publishing world had seen. With an emphasis on both sex positivity and literature — Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” was serialized in the mag in 1954 — it wasn’t long before Playboy became a world-wide phenomenon.
For years, Hefner was something of a grand figure in popular culture: an inspiring man known for both his signature smoking jacket and his numerous young girlfriends.
