When Smallville debuted in 2001, it quickly drew an audience of over 8 million viewers. But as the show went on, the world of TV and movie superheroes was changing, mostly notably with DC's Dark Knight Trilogy, which was a very dark and gritty take on the DC Universe. Suddenly, Smallville seemed out of place.

The stars of Smallville had a hard time finding their footing in Hollywood after the close of their successful show.
