15 Actors Who Revealed How Little They Make In Residuals Amid Strike

One star said, "I make $.03 per quarter for UNLIMITED streams worldwide... & Iger's yachting," while another added, "The math ain’t mathing."

SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America went on strike last month to protest unfair pay and treatment. The two groups shut down Hollywood by joining forces to protest unfair wages and treatment.

But the strike by actors and writers is for a good reason, one of which being that they are not receiving adequate residual payments from streaming services. Once, these payments provided a steady source of income to actors who were compensated each time an episode of television or film was replayed.

Actors are paid virtually nothing when their work is viewed by platforms such as Netflix or Hulu. Even major actors say that they receive payments of just cents or even less. Many actors have taken to social media in order to show how bad the situation is. This puts things into perspective.

See how much each actor has earned in residuals.

1. Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore starred in the This Is Us show for six seasons, but she says she has made little money from it. She says that despite the show being on air for many years, and then later picked up by Hulu she has received "very small checks, like 81-cent ones."

She told The Hollywood Reporter that "the residual issue is a big issue...I spoke with my business manager, who said he received a residual of a penny and a half."

2. Sean Gunn

Sean Gunn, who was a cast member of Gilmore Girls over the years, says that he receives very little residual income from the show. The massively streamed series has found new life on Netflix (and even a new season). Sean Gunn said that while on the picket line, he felt he was unfairly compensated.

"I worked on a TV show called Gilmore Girls that brought Netflix massive profits. It's been a Netflix favorite for over a decade. Sean told The Hollywood Reporter that the show is streamed repeatedly and that he doesn't see any of the revenue.

3. Kimiko Glenn

Orange is the New Black actress Kimiko Gleann has been vocal for years about the meager residuals that she receives. She revealed in 2020 that she received $27.30 overseas royalties for a pay period. Kimiko has now opened up again after the strike began, revealing that many of the cast members had to work second jobs while they were on the show.

"My tits will live forever [and] I should be paid for all the f--king streams that this s---- gets. We were never paid well. You would die if I said, "did not get very well paid." They were still bartenders [and] they still had their second job. They were internationally famous, f--king famous. But they had to keep working because they couldn't pay for not to. She said on a TikTok.

Matt McGorry said in the video that he chose to keep his day job because it was "better paid than the mega-hit television show we were on", while Beth Dover stated "it COST ME money" to appear on the later seasons of the show "since I had to fly myself to the US and was a local hire."

4. William Stanford Davis

Abbott Primary William Stanford Davis, an actor who has worked in the industry for over 35 years, revealed recently that he received a five-cent check for reruns from a TV show he appeared on.

This is a residual cheque. You see it? You see that? That's [five] cents. Postage, paper, and everything else cost more. This is what they think about us as actors. We're striking for better pay, better residuals and a share of the subscription.

5. Heather Matarazzo

Heather Matarazzo, Princess Diaries actor, received a comment while speaking about the strike. A viewer called her out as an "elite", who did not do anything to help the "struggling Americans" who made them rich. Heather Matarazzo responded by displaying several residual payments. Many of them were less than 10c each.

"Really? Are those elite numbers? She replied, "I'm a working-class actor, sir. As are the majority of actors who are in this f--king union."

6. Stephen Glickman

Stephen Glickman says he was not paid any residuals during the period that the show was available on streaming services.

"For those who are trying to understand the SAG Strike...here's a little information for you. BIG TIME RUSSH was on Netflix for 2 years, and then moved to Paramount +. What do you think I got paid in residuals by Netflix and Paramount+? You'll get a hint. "It's $0," tweeted.

"I'm going through a difficult time, just like many others in our industry. I received news last week that I had 56 residual checks. I prayed these were HEALTHY cheques to help me get through this period. Then, lo and behold: 50 (yes, FIFTY!) checks! Five, zero) checks later, I was forced to stop counting because...the total came to $86. This is utter bullsh--t. I KNOW that people struggle much more than I do." Kendrick wrote on Instagram.

When Luke was talking about his role in Dollface, he said he received $7,500 an episode. This ended up being much less due to taxes and payouts for his team. He also noted that he received "zero dollars" for his likeness when it was used on billboards.

"95% (of the SAG actors) cannot earn a living by acting. The actors have to do side jobs. "I am one of these actors", he stated.
