8 Actors Who Admit They Didn't Understand Their Movies

8 Actors Who Admit They Didn't Understand Their Movies

These films, from Mulholland Drive and Inception to Inception, even confused the stars.

Even the biggest stars in movies are captivated by the plots of some of the most amazing films.

Some actors, despite having access to the people who conceived the story in the first instance, are sometimes left confused after wrapping up a project. These stars confess that they don't understand movies they've helped make, whether it's because the plot is veiled in metaphors or there's an open-ended ending.

These stars have spoken about their movies...

1. Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence says she did not fully understand her film Mother, despite knowing a bit about its plot. She was dating Darren Aronofsky at the time, but only understood the movie partially.

"I will be honest." Well, since I slept with the director I had CliffsNotes. So...five? Or maybe a four. Jennifer joked in an episode of What Happens Live .

2. Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis did not quite understand Everywhere at Once while she was filming. She says that while she had a good grasp of her character, she didn't fully understand what was happening until she watched the whole movie.

"Well, I didn't get it at all. I understood her. That was my job. They asked me to be her." Jamie Lee confessed on the Oscars red-carpet that she said yes because she understood.

"I didn’t understand the film until I saw two things: I saw the scene at the laundromat where the husband, wife, and daughter were reunified. I thought, ‘Oh, this is a love movie.'" Then I saw the movie for the first time at [SXSW] and thought, "What a masterwork, this is going to revolutionize cinema."

3. Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe starred in The Lighthouse in 2019. The film follows two men who work as lighthouse keepers on an island which is remote and mysterious. This eventually drives the men to madness. Robert's character sees the light in the final moments of film. However, he admits that he did not know the meaning of the ending and relied on Robert Eggers cues to film the final scene.

He explainedduring the Q&A. "He said that looking at light is so pleasurable, it becomes incredibly painful. Then it becomes incredibly terrifying."

4. Tom Berenger

Inceptionwas difficult to understand, even by some of the stars. Tom Berenger, looking back, says he was confused after reading the film's script, which featured thieves who were able to mine dreams for secrets.

He told The Wall Street Journal that he would be "hard-pressed" if anyone had tortured him to find out what the plot was.

5. Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio had some other questions after the filming ended about Inception. Leonardo DiCaprio's character is seen completing his last task in the final moments of the film and reunited with the children. In doing so, Leonardo's character walks away from his spinning top which tells him if he is dreaming or awake. This leaves the ending open to interpretation.

He said that "the ending depends on the eye of beholder" on The WTF with Marc Maron.

6. Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell was the star of The Lobster, a film that took place in 2015 in a world where singles had 45 days to find love or be turned into animals. Even Colin Farrell admits that the ending leaves much to interpretation.

"I couldn’t tell you." It's not that the writer or director is keeping it a secret, but rather because there's no answer. "There is no before or after in the film," he said to Entertainment Weekly.

"That's what I like about [director Yorgos Langthimos]," he continued. He does not want to talk with his actors about the backstory, objective or intention. He casts people on the basis of their work, and he believes that we will all understand the tone he is aiming for.

7. Laura Harring

Mulholland drive leaves a lot to the interpretation of the viewer, and star Laura Harring believes that this makes it a little complicated. She says that when people watch the movie, they are left with many more questions than answers because director David Lynch put together the film "in such an enigmatic way".

You see the movie and you imagine all these meanings. What does the box say? What is the cowboy's story? What happened? Who is the victim? Diane? Was it Camilla or Diane? Was it Rita or Camilla? Was it Betty or Rita? Who was in the bed at the end of the film? When you think about, it could have been any of them. The film works with any character," said she to The Independent.

Laura's current interpretation of the movie is that "part of it" is a "dream", but she always has "a different theory" when it comes down to who is dreaming.

8. Alec Guinness

Alec Guinness played the iconic Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, but didn't think his character was very logical. In a letter, he complained that he didn't enjoy filming because the script did not make his character's identity clear.

He wrote: "I can't say that I am enjoying the film. New rubbish dialogue is delivered to me every day, on pink paper wages. None of it makes my characters clear or bearable."
