8 Stars Who Are Completely Open About Tough Topics With Their Kids

"It's shocking that it happens, but I tell my children about drugs and the fact their dad is addicted."

It can be difficult to have tough conversations with children. But some parents are willing to be completely open with their children. Many moms and fathers want their children to feel comfortable discussing anything with them, no matter what it is. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kristen Bell are two examples of celebrities who have made it a point to openly discuss any topic that their children wish to talk about. They believe this has helped their relationships with their children.

These celebs have some words of wisdom for their children.

1. Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard

Kristen Bell's and Dax Shepards' two daughters, Delta and Lincoln, may not yet have reached their double digits but they are already discussing difficult topics such as addiction and sex with them. While some may find it shocking, the couple believe it is important that their children know as much as possible about it.

"I hate the word "taboo." It should be removed from the dictionary. Talking about any topic should not be a problem. It's quite shocking to say, but I do talk with my children about drugs and their dad being an addict. We also talk about sex. Kristen spoke in an interview with REAL SIMPLE. There are many 'hard topics' but they don't have the need to be. If you're open and honest with the other person, it's possible to make them feel a little more comfortable.

2. Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk may cover some difficult topics but she believes that Willow needs to be there for all of them. Jada shared her reasons for wanting Willow to participate in the open discussion on sex during an episode about sex.

People are asking, "Oh, do you think that's appropriate to Willow?" I think it's appropriate for Willow. It's life. Jada replied that if I had to tell Jada that she must be cautious in these streets due to all the danger that could come to her as a young woman, then I would.

3. Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow wants to be transparent with her children Apple, and Moses about important topics such as sex. She said that she prefers to remain neutral and let her children lead the conversation.

"I will always encourage my children just to listen to themselves, to listen to their instincts and to follow their lead. I try to remain neutral about the subject. My generation was exposed to a lot of negative messages about sex. I try to be curious. In an interview with ET, she stated that teenagers will never want to discuss sex with their parents.

4. Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields stated that she knew she needed to have sex with Ronan after she discovered her Googling "how do you make a baby". Brooke explained that while the teenager was initially reluctant about the whole thing Brooke suggested that if she wasn’t ready to discuss it, it was likely she wasn’t mature enough for R-rated movies.

"And I said to her, "Listen, if you can’t say penis, or talk about sex...then it is impossible to watch these R-rated films you want to see." Brooke said that they're not as prepared than they think. Brooke shared the story with Fox News.

5. Alyssa Milano

Alyssa Milano has three children, but she is ready to discuss the important topics when they are ready. Her belief is that it's important for children to have open discussions with their parents in order to help them become "socially aware" and more conscious.

"I love it all. I'm ready. I'm ready! He told Us Weekly that he would do it if asked. It's about raising children who are socially conscious and aware. They still have childhoods, and they don't feel completely scared from the moment that they wake up to the moment that they go to bed like their mother.

6. Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks believes in being honest with her children. When they ask her questions she says that she is honest with them and will not lie to them just because it's easier.

"If they ask, it is because they are curious and age-appropriate. It's best to tell them exactly what it is. They'll ask you if you said'stork' and then they'll question your honesty. They'll soon figure it out, Elizabeth stated on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert."

7. Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner was not given "the talk" by her parents. She says she wants to be open with her children. Jennifer Garner says that even as a young mother, she had "given it much thought, especially for [her] daughters."

"I have been to specialist talks. I have read books. She told Time magazine that it doesn't mean she knows more than anyone else. I want them to view sex as a joy, as a gift and as a celebration for love and their bodies. It makes me feel cool and hippieish to see it this way.

8. Jenny McCarthy

Jenny McCarthy realized that she needed to talk with her son, 11 years old. It all began when she accidentally said to her son "sex is like feet rubs", and then she found him saving feet photos on his iPad. She said that she was adamant when she saw a video of a woman giving birth and knew it was the right time.

"I was like, "Oh my God, he's going have a footfetish for his whole life!" Jenny stated that Jenny sat down with him and had a heart-to-heart conversation.
