One Wheel of Fortune contestant was disqualified from winning a car due to a technicality. Many viewers were unsure of the details. Charlene Rubush was a contestant on the show and reached the Bonus Round with $16,500. She was eager to win the Audi.
What kept contestant from winning a car?
Rubush was solving a puzzle under the "What are You Doing?" category. She first guess, "Choosing the correct card." But the last word was incorrect, so Rubush had to guess again. With a slight pause between the last and the final word, she finally gave her correct answer: "Choosing the right...word."
Pat Sajak, the host, said to Pat, "You know Pat, this one's hard, because you spoke all the right words including word 'word'. But, you know, it has to be more or less continuous. We will allow for a pause, but not for more than four to five seconds. I'm sorry. It was a great achievement. However, we cannot give it to you because it was the Audi.
Show's Rule Slammed by Fans
This nitpicking was a source of dismay for many viewers, who took to Twitter to criticize the show's rules. "#WheelofFortune really screwed it up tonight!" Charlene solved this puzzle! One person wrote, "She earned that Audi!"
"Wheel of Fortune you have just lost a viewer. Another tweeted, "I am choosing the right words" to ensure that I never again watch this show. "I'm done! That lady is my friend. She is deserving of that Audi! This rule is the dumbest thing you've ever heard! It was there before the clock ran out!
Another said, "@WheelofFortune we had a good run. I will not be watching the show any more. The AUDI was won by the lady who correctly answered the question within the allowed time. Fake show, hidden rules. "I won't watch it again (until she gets the AUDI ANNND to change the rules)
Other technicalities that anger viewers
It's not the first time that viewers have become angry at the show's technicalities. Many contestants have been confused by the "and” rule in crossword puzzle challenges. They must list all the words, and only those words. This is done without the use of "and" before any other words. Some contestants lose cash prizes if they answer the question in a sentence. Although many were disappointed Rubush did not win the Audi, they still took home $16,500 in prize money and a nice vacation.
