Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Alanis Morissette arrive from Windsor Castle. King Charles III and queen Camilla make a surprise visit.
The contestants faced real challenges as Alanis Morrisette and Ed Sheeran performed their catalogues on the "American Idol' stage.
As Katy Perry and Lionel Richie remained in London to celebrate King Charlies III, they brought themselves as guest judges (and Alanis as mentor) for the Top 8. Ryan Seacrest checked in on them periodically, and even had the king or queen walk by to show that they were aware of how late is there. !
The Funniest Coronation Tweets, Memes and Viral Moments
Charles joked with Katy and Lionel who had set up in the Grand Reception Room of Windsor Castle: "I'm just checking how long you plan to use this room."
Luke's comment that he had never used the word "liquidity" in Lionel’s chair after Alanis used it proved the judges were watching live. Lionel used that word in their next interstitial.
Luke said that he loved sitting in Katy’s chair at another time when they were live chatting with Lionel & Katie from England. Katy was making a rude hand gesture, which would be illegal in the US, before she suddenly said, "Oh I didn't realize we were still on!"
They had a lot of work to do when they tackled such emotional songs by Alanis and Ed. Some of the contestants pushed themselves to new heights, resulting in some amazing and palpable moments. They performed solo Alanis cover songs and duets with Ed's music.
We'd say that the duets are more consistent, as Alanis' performances can be a little reckless. Both she and Ed gave beautiful and heartfelt performances on stage.
Alanis, as judge, was the more dominant presence. She provided solid feedback as a judge and mentor, but mostly praise. Ed was a big "aw shucks!" Ed was "aw shucks!" He was a good man, but didn't feel comfortable in the chair, and didn't do much from it.
Warning: Since I am safe at home, it's likely that I will be harsher than my friends Alanis Morissette and Luke Bryan, or Ed Sheeran. But I could be nicer too. Maybe.
Just for fun, let's rank them from worst to best to see which ones I like. So I can determine who is the best, and see if my votes are correct.

FILLER
Alanis Morissette
("Thank U, Alanis Morissette") This song has been around for 25 years. If you rewinded the clock that far back in time, it would still sound exactly like this. She hasn't lost any of her commitment and power to perform in those years. In the 1990s, her abandonment of performance was what made her so remarkable. It's magical to watch an artist lose themselves so much in their music that they don't even know what they are doing physically. They let the music come through and leave us all breathless. Alanis spoke that language for a whole generation and still does today.
Ed Sheeran
(Eyes Closed, Ed Sheeran). Ed also performed with his eyes closed, but that didn't take away from his incredible voice. Ed Sheeran has a piercing voice that is almost unmatched in the genre (except for Lewis Capaldi). Ed has mastered a unique vocal sound. Not only can you instantly recognize it, it also makes you stop and listen. Take note contestants, this is the type of control and audience mastery you can achieve with your voice quality and song selection.
ALANIS MORISSETTE ROUND 1
Colin Stough
("Hand in My Pocket," Alanis Morrissette – 18, Amory MS) This song has a reckless abandon and Colin couldn't quite get there. He was surprisingly reserved during this song, almost as if he were self-conscious. It's possible, at 18 years old. He has this amazing tone, but now was the time to let it all out. Lionel told him to be "nasty." As evidenced by his gentle head bopping when he is not singing, he still hasn't. He could lose his chance at making the Finals, as he was a sure thing a month earlier.
Oliver Steele
("You'd Oughta know," Alanis Morissette, 25, Mount Juliet TN) Oliver, who was saved by the judges in week one, said he had seen comments saying he seemed a bit sleepy. We used that word last week. We were happy to hear that he was prepared to awaken us with a surprise and bold song selection this week. Alanis told him, "I love the anger. I think it can move worlds." Oliver was pushing himself, and it was great that his dad was there. Although it wasn't as abandoning as Alanis's track, we have seen more from Oliver. Although we loved watching him show off his artistry, we weren't convinced that it would be enough for him to beat an incredible Top 8 (that barely made it in). It was also a surprise to see the shaved scalp at the end.

Warren Peay
(All I Really Want, Alanis Morissette, 24, Bamberg SC) This track had some nice elements that felt signature Warren. He put his stamp on a song so many people know note for note. Alanis was not only one of the most popular singers of her time, but she also had a unique style. Her delivery is also so distinctive that it's hard to replicate. Warren was a little unsure of himself at first, but soon found his voice. He brought his own sound to this track, and it was perfect.
Megan Danielle
("Head Over Feet," Alanis Morrissette, 21, Douglasville GA) Megan held us in her palms through the opening lines of the song, but lost us when she hit that big note half way through. We knew she could sing that way, so it didn't feel like she was trying to pander to us. This ripped us out of the beautiful story she had been creating. Megan is an excellent storyteller but, in that moment, she should have yelled out more than run beautifully.

Zachariah Smith
("Ironic," Alanis Morrissette – 20, Amory MS) Alanis gave Zachariah great advice in this case, helping him loosen up, and (as Zachariah wanted) reining in the excesses. Relaxing into the movement was more important than being tense. We got to hear a side of his voice rarely heard. The result was a fun, multi-layered vocal performance. Early on, he wasn't quite as confident with his soft side but by the second attempt we were all in. It's wonderful to see him explore new artistic ways.
Haven Madison
("You Learn," Alanis Morrissette – 17, Clarksville, TN). This song is perfect for Haven. She could learn a lot from Alanis about how to be unashamedly yourself in this industry and in life. It was a very authentic sounding song, even though she didn't change anything from the original. She really felt the lyrics, and it was a very real experience. We now believe in her even more than in previous weeks. This week we were ready to write off her, but this performance didn't make it easy.

We Ani
(Uninvited, Alanis Morissette- 24 Harlem NY) After that we will give you the moments you require. When we hit that growling moment, we sat a little more straight. Every time she takes the stage, her voice is full of grace and power. She can sing anything and that roar was a hint at a new place where she could go, one we haven't seen since Hawai'i. We is the clear frontrunner for this season. If Iam wins, then We is a logical candidate to follow him and hopefully have a chance at a successful career.
I am Tongi
("Guardian," Alanis Morrissette – 18, Kahuku HI)Written as a tribute for her children, Iam changed it and sang it to pay homage to his mother. It was palpable. He has a tone that is unlike anyone else, and can wrap you in a warm embrace while also providing a sense of safety all with one note. Alanis's help in learning how to be big gave his performances more variety and allowed for both big and small moments that were dynamically stronger. Iam seems to be untouchable in this season, we say. Since the audition rounds, no season has felt as dominated by a single artist since Fantasia (Season 3).

Round 2 DUETS ED SHEERAN
We Ani & Warren Peay
("Perfect," Ed Sheeran). We would have chosen to be the winner in this pairing. But we were wrong. Warren's performance was amazing. She sounded beautiful and the two of them shared a sweetness that was very sweet. His voice had beautiful layers and a nuance of emotion that we had never experienced before. They were able convincingly to portray the emotion of the song in their interactions (a little touch on his arm at that point was all that mattered). It was a completely realized artistic vision, from the way they moved on stage to how they interacted to their amazing vocal work both together and separately.
Oliver Steele & Iam Tongi
("Photograph," Ed Sheeran). Iam and Oliver perform a duet for the second time and it's just as magical. Iam's singing elicited a roar from the audience. He is still the frontrunner for this season, but this duet really elevated Oliver in our eyes. The two work together beautifully and show mutual respect. Iam's voice has a richer quality, and is filled with more emotion. Their harmonies created a beautiful, gentle sound. Oliver, who was also in the audience, seemed to notice, saying to Iam: "I'm not sure if I will go home, but my money is on you if I decide to."
Eight stars who have opened up about toxic relationships
Megan Danielle and Colin Stough
("Dive," Ed Sheeran). Megan has brought back Colin, who we had been missing. He was fully engaged and committed to the message of the song, with his unmistakable gravel in full view. Here is the Colin that we fell in love and the Danielle that we cannot get enough of. This duet was a perfect fit for "Idol's" country style and tone. They could release a full version of this song tomorrow and find a big hit.
Zachariah Smith & Haven Madison
("Thinking Out Loud," Ed Sheeran). Haven has a great night. She adds a touch of stench to a beautiful vocal. Zachariah continued to display the various levels of his vocal range and the result felt like two individuals expressing their love. Haven's voice had this haunted quality that we've heard in the past, it was a little breathy, but penetrating and left us stunned. We hope that losing this show (probably) won't slow her down. Alanis said that it felt like two professionals performing their own duet.

PREDICTIONS AND RESULTS
We're baffled by the results of our own poll, which shows that all three of us country-rockers who came last: Colin Stough Oliver Steele Warren Peay are in the bottom 3. We don't think they're weak. It's the tight competition right now. We also think that they haven't been living up their full potential.
Even after combining both performances, they still ended up at the bottom of the rankings. Haven Madison, however, jumped to the top, right next to Zachariah. No one is fooled into thinking that either of them will win the season. But it's a testament to how impressive a night they both had.
We don't think that will happen. We thought it was time to say goodbye, but Colin's duet probably saved him.
We are worried about Haven based on what we have seen so far. We don't think that despite her best performance of the competition, she will have the same level of support as Megan Danielle or We Ani.
Ryan's first entry into the Top 5 was ZachariahSmith. Megan Danielle, and Iam tongi followed him. Iam Tongi gave Oliver the lei that his aunt had sent him after he was declared safe. This is likely a testament to their brotherhood on the show, and also because Oliver felt the same way we did.
After We Anji was ranked in the Top 5, we found ourselves with the exact conundrum that we had anticipated. The three gritty guys stood next to Haven. We'd now say that she is more deserving of going on but still believed America would support Colin in his journey.
It was exactly that, as Colin Stough won and Haven got to enjoy the high of winning, along with Oliver who revealed new sides to himself and let himself feel deeper and Warren Peay who has a tone so unique that it could make a real mark in country or Christian music.
The show will continue Sundays at 8 pm ET on ABC. ET on ABC.
