"I asked, "Can I do that part?" "Can I play that part?" The actor told GQ that he remembered the question.
Michael Cera is the perfect Allan, the adorable but awkward doll that lives in Barbieland along with the other Barbies and Kens.
The actor revealed that he pursued Gerwig's role actively, expressing his interest in the project by contacting her directly.
Cera, 35 years old, was describing his most notable roles in an interview with GQ. He recalled the moment he was cast in the summer blockbuster that has earned more than a billion dollars in box office receipts.
The star said, "It was very last-minute casting." My manager called to check on my availability, then he called and said, "I received a phone call about this film. The Barbie movie. Greta Gerwig is directing the movie, and for about four months it will be filmed in London. I told them that you wouldn't like to do it, because you don't really want to go there.
I was like "What? What are you saying? What do you mean? He continued. "He didn't blow it, or anything like that, but he said, 'I managed expectations that you wouldn't want to do it. I was like 'How could I not do it! "I need to do it!"
Cera revealed that he had "somehow obtained Greta's e-mail address" and had personally contacted the Oscar nominee to offer himself as the actor.
"I asked her via email, if I could be part of it. "Can I play that part?" He shared. "And she said, 'Lets get on Zoom right away.' Here is a Zoom link. I will be there for the next half hour. She was on Zoom and said, "Click the link when you're ready." We talked about it and then it all happened very quickly."
Barbieland in the movie is filled with differentversions of Barbie and Ken. These include Margot Robert's Barbie, and Ryan Gosling’s Ken. Allan, however, is just Allan. He is the only Barbie of his kind.
"Allan's a sad character." "He's just someone who doesn't have a place in the universe," Cera said before sharing his opinion on why Mattel discontinued the Allan doll.
He explained, "It was just not selling." "The world didn't really need Ken to have a buddy... Barbie is great, we can bring in a lot of Barbies and her friends. We already have Ken and don't want to take it further. Allan was a bit left behind.
Barbie has continued to smash box office records ever since its July 23 release. The all-star film has grossed over $541 millions domestically, and $1.2 billion globally. The Dark Knight , a 2008 Batman blockbuster directed by Christopher Nolan, was surpassed earlier this week as Warner Bros.'s highest-grossing film domestically.
Cera stated in an interview with GQ, conducted before the July 14th strike began, "Honestly, the anticipation for this movie has been high ever since we started working on it." "It's very infectious." There's something going on in the world that makes people want to see a Barbiemovie. "It feels like the perfect time for a Barbie film."
