California Home Goes Up In Flames After Witnesses Saw Fireball Falling from Sky

California Home Goes Up In Flames After Witnesses Saw Fireball Falling from Sky

After watching footage from a neighbour's Ring camera, the homeowner stated that it looked like a flaming ball.

After a Northern California home burned to the ground on Saturday, a meteor could be to blame.

Firefighters from Nevada County's Penn Valley Fire Department responded to a structure-fire at Dustin Procita's home on Friday night. They battled the fire for approximately four hours.

Procita said that she heard a loud bang. "I began to smell smoke. "I went to my porch, and it was completely inflamed."

Procita managed to escape with one of the two dogs but the other died in the fire.

Witnesses described seeing a bright light ball in the sky at the same time as the fire. This was also captured on nearby Ring camera footage. Procita said, "Oh wow! Looks like a flaming ball coming out of the sky," when he saw it for himself ( over).

Procita explained to KCRA that they believed it was a meteor. As a child, I was familiar with meteor showers and other phenomena. But, as an adult, I didn't anticipate them landing in my yard. Although I didn't see it, everyone I spoke to said that it was a flaming object falling from the sky and landing in that area.

The Southern Taurids meteor Shower did indeed occur over the weekend, or "Halloween Fireballs", as NASA calls them.

The Penn Valley Fire Department is investigating the cause of the inferno, which could take as long as two weeks. Captain Josh Miller stated that he had also heard talk about an "asteroid or meteor -- one of those two."

"I heard one person tell me about it and I was like, okay, I'll keep that in my mind." He said that he heard from more people, including three to four others.

Dustin's mother set up a GoFundMe to help her son and wife after they "lost everything" in a fire. She said, "It was an absolute loss," and that the couple don't have homeowner or fire insurance due to their rural location and exorbitantly expensive premiums.
