Some were searching for seams on a costume while others insisted the creature was "a real bear dude."
Hangzhou Zoo in China has been forced to defend its sun bears, insisting that they are real bears and not people dressed as bears.
Wild speculation started last week when a video posted on Chinese social media led some to question whether the black sun-bear seen in the clip was real. The bear's behavior confused many, with some saying that it looked like a human when it stood on its back legs. Others pointed out the folds in its body.
Some people were convinced that the video was a "real bear, dude" while others weren't.
To calm doubters , the Zoo released a statement on Sunday from the perspective the female bear named Angela.
Some people think that I am a human being. You don't seem to understand me well," the message read. When it comes to bears the first thing you think of is a massive figure with incredible power... But, not all bears have this kind of power.
She continued to explain that her bear species is "petite," and "the smallest in the world," adding that she was "dating" Dalu, a male named bear but "want to take things slowly."
Staff members also reported that due to heat, no one would be able "to last more than a few moments" in a suit of fur "without laying on the ground" -- and added that Angela was "definitely not human." They went on to say the zoo, which is run by the government, is "not a place where such a situation would happen."
According to Chao News, (via Reuters), visitors have increased by 30% since the video became a media sensation.
