"We have never seen a vehicle so close to the edge of the water."

On Wednesday, dramatic scenes took place as the Coast Guard tried to rescue a woman who's car ended up floating towards Niagara Falls.

As rescuers raced against the clock to save the driver, crowds gathered along the banks of the rushing water before the vehicle was pulled over the 180ft drop.

Although a helicopter was able to rescue the woman from her car, it was too late. They discovered that she was already inside the car.

Multiple witnesses saw the car floating down the river on Wednesday afternoon.

WIBV was informed by Chris Rola, Captain of the State Parks Police. He said that both police and fire drones quickly rushed to determine how many people were inside the car. They found that there was only one person in the car, and she wasn't moving at all.

A Coast Guard helicopter was hovering high above the vehicle in bad weather conditions. One crew member managed winch down to get into the car and grab the driver. The Coast Guard helicopter flew to safety.

Captain Rola stated that it was difficult to reach the vehicle without two points of contact. So, the decision was quickly taken to use the helicopter.

Investigators are still trying to determine how the vehicle got into the water. Locally, the victim, who is yet to be identified, may have driven into the river near the traffic and passenger bridges.

He said, "We have never seen a vehicle in water so close to the edge."

Rola praised rescuers' "incredible efforts" in extremely dangerous circumstances.

The Canadian Coast Guard was also involved in the rescue operation. The State Parks Police are currently trying to determine the best way to rescue the vehicle from the sea.
