The actor shared a throwback picture of himself as a teenager, before removing the implant to play Stu for the 2009 comedy.

Ed Helms, the star of Ed Helms, reveals a secret from behind the scenes about his character's famous missing tooth.

In the 2009 comedy, Helms’ character Stu wakes up after a wild night in Vegas to discover that he has lost one of his teeth. It is later revealed that he had removed the tooth while drunk.

Helms revealed in the past that he pulled out his own "real" teeth when he removed his dental implant. On Wednesday, Helms, 49, revealed that he and his dentist created the gap in The Hangover. He also said that he has had the "permanent" implant there since he was teenager.

Helms posted a throwback photo of himself as a kid, wearing braces and glasses, showing his gaping tooth and small gap. Helms also shared a second picture of a cropped version of his image from the Hangover poster.

Helms' caption began, "Stumbled upon this old photo," referring to the throwback photograph.

"Everyone asks me whether I removed my teeth for The Hangover. Answer: kind of. You can see that I never had an adult tooth grow in. For most of my childhood I either wore flippers with fake teeth on them or a huge gap. "Around age 16, I had a permanent dental implant surgically placed."

Helms then recalled how his "nerdy-hillbilly" appearance in The Hangover was created.

He wrote: "20 years later I was in preproduction for The Hangover, discussing with Todd Phillips the 'nerdy-hillbilly' look we could achieve after Stu pulled out his own teeth." "I told my dentist that I had a crown over an implant and he said, 'Sure! We can remove the crown from that implant, leaving you with a nice gap. We will then put a crown on the implant when you are done. That's exactly what we did."

The caption ended with a joke. "Yes, I did wear serial killer glasses when I was a kid." ", referring to the aviator sunglasses worn by serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

The Hangover, which also featured Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis Justin Bartha and others, was a box office hit. The Hangover was followed by two sequels: The Hangover Part II (2011) and The Hangover Part III (2013).
