Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty of four out 11 federal charges against her. But what about her partner? Ramesh Balwani was Holmes' ex-boyfriend and alleged co-conspirator. But, it was pushed back to February.
The Theranos Scandal
Holmes was the founder and former CEO of Theranos (a failed start-up for blood-testing), in 2009. Four charges of defrauding investors were thrown out. Holmes was also found guilty of conspiring to defraud patients. Three more fraud charges were not ruled out by the jury and the judge will likely declare a mistrial.
Balwani, the former president at Theranos, was identified as a person of special interest during Holmes' trial. Balwani, she claimed, verbally and sexually abused Balwani, manipulating her into any crime or fraud. They met on a Chinese-language immersion vacation in 2002. Holmes was 18 and Balwani was 37. The couple began dating shortly after, and they started working together on Theranos.
What will Holmes' Trial Impact on Balwani?
Balwani's trial is not likely to be a success because Holmes' guilty verdict doesn't bode well. Chris Slobogin, a Vanderbilt University law professor, says that Holmes' verdict makes it "extremely unlikely" that Balwani will be acquitted in his trial. "Their actions are too closely connected to imagine any other outcome."
Although Holmes' allegations of abuse won't be raised in the case against Balwani, they will bring up the text messages between them. According to the legal team of the government, the hundreds of texts and emails between Holmes & Balwani makes them inextricably connected in the alleged fraud.
The texts, some dating back as far as 2014, show that the relationship between them is at times romantic and bitter. Holmes refers to Balwani as her "king" or "tiger," and says that this is their year. The messages became more terse over the years. Balwani stated that she had worked tirelessly for six years to help her in 2015. It's sad to see where you and me are. It would have been better, I thought.
Holmes' trial featured more than two dozen witnesses who connected Balwani with the same alleged lies regarding Theranos’ overhyped claims. Balwani's case against the government will likely draw from Holmes's own case. Holmes argued that Balwani’s financial modeling produced unrealistic revenue projections, which investors testified that they believed. As the trial progresses, we'll keep checking in.
