"I felt like I was in a cage," said the actress who hasn't acted in a movie since "Little Women", in 2019.

Emma Watson opens up about her five-year absence from Hollywood.

In an interview with Financial Times, she revealed why she hadn't acted for years and whether she would do so again.

Watson, 33, last appeared in "Little Women" in 2019, which was filmed in late 2018.

She admitted, "I wasn’t very happy." "I felt like I was in a cage," she said. It was hard for me to sell something I didn't really have much control over. "To stand in front a film, and have each journalist ask, 'How do you see this?'

Watson said, "It was difficult to be the spokesperson and face of things when I wasn't involved in the process." I was held responsible in a manner that I found really frustrating because I had no voice. I did not have a choice. "I began to realize that all I wanted was to be able to say, if anyone was going to criticize me, that 'Yes, you screwed it up. It was my choice, and I should have done it better.'

Watson replied, "Yes absolutely, I do plan to return to acting." But I am happy to wait and see what the next thing is. I love what i do. Finding a way that I can do it without having to split myself up into different people and faces is the key. I don't like the idea of switching into robot mode. Does that make any sense?

The "Bling Ring" actress, who was promoting Renais Gin, a new brand of gin that she and her brother Alex created, also talked about working behind the cameras. Watson directed and wrote a Prada ad last year.

She recalled, "people always told me that I should direct and/or produce even when I worked on Potter." "I was afraid it would be purely technical and not creative. I could not bring what I believe is my skill set. Alex's request and requests from friends -- "I need to shoot a photo" or "I'm creating a video" -- made me realize that I knew a lot. It seemed impossible to become a director. I didn't have any confidence. It's strange, I know. "I grew up in a movie set."

Watson revealed that she will direct a music clip for an artist who is a popular one. Watson didn't mention any names but said, "You have definitely heard of him."
