Gwyneth Paltrow's 'Shallow Hal' Body Double Opens Up About Eating Disorder After Film

She said that she was "technically dying" because she was "so thin, you could see through my teeth and my skin was grey."

Ivy Snitzeropens up about her experiences appearing as Gwyneth's Body Double in the 2001 movie Shallow Hal.

In a recent interview with Amelia Tait, the former actress reflected on the film's impact and its age after so many years.

Ivy, a 20-year-old acting student, said, "I wanted to be funny primarily." She had hoped to become an actor or comic.

She didn't initially have a problem with the premise, noting that it seemed progressive .

Snitzer said that at the time, "if you saw an obese person in a film, they were villains." The character Rosemary was "cool, popular and she had friends."

Snitzer recalled the filming experience as being enjoyable.

It was an amazing experience. She said it was fun to be a part of a film - "there are so few people in the world who get to do this," she said. She added that everyone on the set "treated me as if I was really important, like they couldn’t make the film without me" and that she felt "really at ease" while they filmed her.

Ivy had no idea how the film would be received or the extent of the response.

She said, "I didn't think that millions of people would see the film." She received diet pills and was criticized for saying that "it's not the worst thing to be fat." Even the positive attention, like receiving a symphony written just for her by someone else, wasn't what she wanted.

She said, "I was really scared. I got so small." "I thought, 'Maybe fame isn't for me. Maybe I don't even want to be an actress.'" Maybe I'll try something else.

The actress had lap-band surgery shortly after. She said that she suffered "a torsion similar to what dogs experience and die from."

She said that she was "technically dying" because she was "so thin, you could see through my teeth and my skin was grey."

She thought at the time that it was "a fantastic" idea, to "do something that will fix [my] weight."

You're supposed not to be fat if you are. I hated my own body the way I should have. I ate lots of salads. "I had eating disorders which I was proud of."

Snitzer recalled, "I didn't think I should be ashamed about those behaviors like many people do." "For me, they were supposed to make me proud."

Ivy, now the owner of an insurance agency in Philadelphia, found her way towards "a lot of stability" and you can read more about it here.
