She talks about "challenging stereotypes" around menopause, and "owning her sexuality."
Halle Berry opens up about her menopause experience -- and about how she is tackling stereotypes about ageing.
In an article she wrote for Women's Health published on Monday the actress was candid about "embracing and owning" the changes she has experienced in her life. She also shared that despite being in "the middle of menopause" she is her "best self."
The change in hormones occurs after 40. John Hopkins Medicine states that although all women experience symptoms differently, they can include hot flashes and fatigue.
Berry stated that the most important part of owning one's sexuality is to accept and embrace where you are at. "And I am in the middle menopause," Berry said. "I am questioning everything I thought I understood about menopause. You know, things like: "Your life is finished." 'You are disposable.' You are no longer needed by society. You should retire. "You should retire.
"I challenge all stereotypes that you must look or feel a particular way. "I'm my best me now that I am 56 years old," added she. "I am the best. blank is all I have left. I am firmly in my womanhood. "I finally understand that what I say is valuable even if nobody else agrees."
The Oscar-winning actress, who has two children, Maceo, 9 and Nahla, 15 years old, also spoke about the pressures placed on women by society to have kids.
She said, "If you are in your mid-30s, don't get bogged down with the idea that you must have children at a certain age." "You decide."
Berry added, "If you want children, don't be defined by the old ideologies of what women are'supposed' to do." Do it only if that's what you want, as you will have to sacrifice a great deal of your own life in order to grow these other lives. You may not be a woman that wants to grow other lives. "No harm, no foul and no judgement."
She added, "Be clear who you are and what you want to do with your life. It's all yours."
Berry has also revealed that her experience as director of the 2020 film Bruisedhas influenced her perspective and approach when it comes to deciding whether she will take on a new project.
She said, "I will never be the same person that I was before becoming a director." You can't go back to being just the dancing bear. It's impossible. I've done several productions since directing Bruised. "I always wear my director's hat."
She continued by saying that "you need to have a good 'why' before you ask me to perform something." She added that she "challenges" every script sent to her. "I ask 'What is the female perspective?' Many of the scripts are still written today by men. Men are still writing for women. Men are writing for women they don't understand.
The Monster's Ball actress encouraged those who may not understand the POV of a woman to "open your minds, expand your realities, and listen to my point-of-view." Take that into consideration."
