The actor said to Esquire that he understood why the character wanted to stick with his point-of-view, but he also wanted to keep his own.

Harrison Ford looks back on the making of "The Devil's Own", a 1997 thriller in which he co-starred with Brad Pitt.

In an extensive interview for Esquire's Summer 2023 cover, the 80 year old actor explained why the film had been "complicated to make" and revealed the reason he and Pitt butted heads.

"Brad wrote the script." Ford replied, "They then offered me the role." "I kept my comments on the character and construction of the film -- I admired Brad. I first of all admire Brad. I think Brad is a great actor. He's an incredibly decent man."

He added, "But we couldn’t agree on the director until we met Alan Pakula. I had previously worked with him but Brad hadn’t." "Brad's character was complex, and I wanted to add a layer of complexity on my end so it wasn’t just a battle between good and evil. "That's how I came up with this bad-shooting idea."

Ford said that after they had trouble deciding on a director for the film, he and Pitt were unable to reach an agreement when it came to writing the screenplay.

He told Esquire, "I had worked with a screenwriter -- but suddenly we were shooting and there wasn't a script Brad and I could agree on." "Each one of us had a different idea about it. I can understand why Brad wanted to stick to his opinion, but I also wanted to keep my own. Or, I was trying to impose my view. It was complex."

Ford had nothing but good things to say, despite the production's alleged difficulties. "I really like the film. He shared, "Very much."

The Devil's Own follows Tom O'Meara, an Irish-American cop, as he discovers that Frankie McGuire, his house guest (Pitt), was an I.R.A terrorist undercover.

The film was not well received at the time by critics, with a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 35%. The Devil's Own, which had a budget of $90 million, made $140 million in the world. This is not even twice as much as its budget.

Here is Ford's complete Esquire profile.
