"I don’t want to be first Black. I am the first Idris.
Idris Elba opens up about his experiences as a Black man living in Hollywood. He also discusses the labels he has been given and the ones he chooses to put on.
Interview with Esquire U.K.: "Luther" star explained why he doesn't consider himself a "Black actor."
Elba, 50 years old, stated that she stopped calling herself a Black actor because it placed me in a box. We have to learn. We have to. Our skin is nothing more than skin.
"Ofcourse, I am a member the Black community. He added, "You say it's a prominent one." "But when you go to America, I am a prominent member the British community. "Oh, UK's in my house!"
He stressed that, while he recognizes that he might not be the first person to achieve something similar to him, he still wants his accomplishments and talent as an actor be what makes him stand out.
"I accept that I may be the first person to look like me in some cases to do a certain task. It is part of my journey." Elba stated that it was a part of my legacy. "So other people, Black and white, who grew up in the same circumstances as me, can see that there was a Canning Town kid who did what I did. It is possible.
He continued, "I didn’t become an actor because it was something I didn’t see Black people doing and I wanted to change that." "I chose it because it was a great job and it seemed like I could do a good career at it." You are often asked about what it is like to be the first Black person to do something. It's exactly the same as if I were a white person. This is my first time.
Elba said, "I don’t want to become the first Black." I'm the first Idris."
Actor of "Beast of No Nation", the actor shared his thoughts on racism, saying that it is "only as powerful and as powerful as you make it to be."
He said, "If we spent half of our time talking about differences and the similarities between us instead, the whole planet would see a shift in how we interact with one another." "We are obsessed with race as humans. This obsession can hinder people's aspirations and hinder their growth. Racism should be discussed. Racism is very real. It's only as strong as you make it.
